NEW: LexisNexis, the huge legal research firm, signed a $16.8 million contract w/ICE, giving access to billions of personal records, like credit histories, license plates, phone data, & more.
This is a new frontier: These data brokers are increasingly working w/police & agencies like ICE & CBP, selling vast troves of personal info.
This lets ICE agents pinpoint people they want to deport, knowing their addresses, phone & internet subscriptions, DMV records, etc.
We've seen how this supercharges ICE's deportations: Two agents sitting in a car entering data can terrorize an entire community. Their information is entered into a computer, their records are pulled out, & then people start disappearing
LexisNexis is now participating in this. It says it has 283 million "individual dossiers," meaning ICE will have data on huge swaths of the country at its fingertips.
And you can't exactly go around w/out a phone, w/out internet. You can't hide these digital breadcrumbs.
These big data contracts were often first signed under Obama: Thomson Reuters, Palantir, & other big tech firms first started working w/ICE when Obama shifted its priorities towards "criminal" prosecution.
ICE needed a way to pinpoint these new targets & turned to Silicon Valley
And now this contract, which seems to be replacing a contract Thomson Reuters had w/ICE, which provided the exact same kinds of records.
We can't overstate the harm this has. Even if you're in a sanctuary city, even if you're in a sanctuary state, ICE now has access to data flows that let them come to your house. The fear this will have on immigrant communities is immense.
And we can't let Biden repeat the arguments of the Obama admin, that they're focusing on "national security" threats or some other criminal categories.
This is how these contracts become permanent tools of the enforcement system.
Jacinta kicks-off national 'Deportations Under Biden' #EyesOnICE forum,“Since 3/1 @conmijente w/ #WeareHome campaign & partner orgs have been organizing #EyesonICE forums across the country to lift up the stories & demands of the ppl who’ve confronted detention and deportation.
Jacinta w/ @conmijente shares the plans for the final #EyesonICE forum, “On May 3rd we'll have our closing forum, where we have invited @AliMayorkas to attend. We hope he’ll join us.”
Today’s passage of #DreamAndPromise by the House is the result of decades of deep organizing by immigrant communities & reflects the urgent need to provide protection from deportation.
But the addition of harsh criminalization provisions in this version is very concerning.
The policing & mass incarceration systems in this country are fundamentally rigged against Black & Latinx ppl, and the #DreamAndPromise Act is no exception.
#HR6 is designed to strip access to Biden's promise of immigration reform from people who have experienced police contact.
Criminalization born of a racist system cant be the measure we use to determine who belongs & who goes.
Instead of extending access to undocumented communities of color #HR6 has punitive provisions that could make anyone who’s committed a misdemeanor ineligible for legal status.
Many of us are preparing ourselves for what happens on #ElectionDay. Here's what we know and how we can best organize for the week. A thread ⏬ (1/6) #FueraTrump
KEEP CALM. PATIENCE. Let's be honest, this election is going to be like no other— the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted how we vote, & must ensure everyone has their say and that every ballot is counted! (2/6)
WE MUST COUNT. The GOP is a political minority! The country is changing. So Trump & the GOP are trying to change up the rules in the middle of the game, to preserve power. (3/6)
"How did ICE know that I lived here? How did they know that so & so is my cousin? How did they know that I worked at this place and would travel from this location everyday?"
—Jacinta González
We realized that ICE was accessing our private data.
Latinx communities MUST show up powerfully right now.
We must go beyond hollow statements of solidarity & towards a genuine compañerismo.
We must take concrete action that goes beyond addressing intra-community anti-Blackness.
The time now calls for modeling pro-Blackness & an embodied sense that our fates are linked.
Our task is to stand shoulder to shoulder & put it out in the work.
Mijente stands with all Black communities across the country who are calling out the injustice of the state-sanctioned murder of Black people in the hands of the police.
