April 5, 1992, the Siege of Sarajevo begins. The longest siege of a capital city in modern history. It would not be fully lifted until February 29, 1996; 1,425 days of death, terror, and defiance. The machinations of those who would destroy it persist — but Sarajevo endures. Image
These lockdowns have often reminded me of the last few weeks before the siege began. Long hrs indoors, men in masks on the streets, increasingly ominous press conferences, family and friends cycling through denial, fear, depression. A terrible, anxious stillness to it all.
The war in Croatia was a yr old by April 92; the first rounds of ethnic cleansing by Serb nationalist militias in east Bosnia already underway. That Milosevic’s death squads turned to Sarajevo was not a surprise. But the human mind struggles to rationalize its own doom.
Victims of atrocities often experience their trauma as a blur of episodic, scattered events. But it’s important to remember that Milosevic’s destruction of YUG & the Bosnian Genocide were systemic, planned, organized. They did it according to a blueprint. It was intentional. Image

After the European Parliament explicitly votes down repeated attempts by Croatian MEPs to force inclusion of “constitutive people” concept in 2020 BiH report, CRO PM says says “it would be good” if it was included all the same. Car wreck diplomacy. klix.ba/clanak/2106241…
This should be studied in IR courses the world over; antithesis of the state as rational, self-interested actor. A small state incinerating what little diplomatic weight it has on an initiative (propping up a dissolving sectarian regime in neighboring state) doomed to failure.
“Realists argue that states act in their rational self-interest in the international system and seek to maximize their power…”

Croatia’s BiH policy:

Wow. BiH media (via SLO) have published leaks of the “dissolution non-paper” but speculate it may, in part, have been drafted by the Hungarians. It envisions near complete partition of BiH btw SRB/CRO but also KOS-ALB unification. vijesti.ba/clanak/532089/…
If it is established that this came from Janša’s cabinet, and/or was written in tandem w/ Budapest, this is a major diplomatic scandal for the EU. Two of its members are gaming-out the partition of a sovereign state & the wholesale reordering of the WB state system. Unacceptable.
This actually much more radical than what Mogherini’s cabinet was pushing viz the KOS-SRB “land swap”, as its proposing partitioning BiH against the will of most of its citizens + Greater ALB, SRB, CRO. A lot more needs to be done here than saying it’s not official EU policy.

A treasured family story for you: during the fascist occupation of BiH in the 1940s, my great-aunt survived a Chetnik massacre in East Bosnia by playing dead, digging herself out of a mass grave, sneaking through the woods for days, then joining up w/ a Partisan resistance cell.
My great-uncle - on my Father’s side - managed to escape recruitment by NDH Home Guard by sneaking out of town on the back of logging truck. His mother’s parting words were “remain honorable” which, upon also joining the Partisans, he interpreted to mean don’t loot dead bodies.
So, when he managed to come upon and kill an Italian officer in the woods a while later, all he took was his pistol, leaving his jewelry, boots etc. That was one of the last stories he told me before he passed away a few yrs back. Still had the weapon too.

As part of their ongoing revisionist campaign re: the Bosnian War & Genocide, the secessionist regime in BiH's RS entity recently convened two "international commissions" to rewrite the established facts of the Srebrenica Genocide and the Siege of Sarajevo. 🧵
These two specific events were chosen bc they are the most internationally well known features of the Bosnian War & Genocide & the Dodik regime wants to recast their understanding in the global discourse to justify its ongoing political ambitions; namely, secession from BiH.
Their report on the Siege of Sarajevo, which specifically deals with the treatment of ethnic Serbs by BiH govt forces during the siege, was released today. It is rife w/ half-truths, spin, selective sourcing, fabrications, and conspiracism. No surprise.

I’m disturbed that Dodik’s long-time claims re: the possibility of “peaceful separation” in BiH have clearly found an audience in some EU quarters. An absolutely insane idea; as in 1992-95, vast majority of Bosnians will not abide attempts to partition or dissolve the country. 🧵
If anything, those attitudes have hardened after the Bosnian Genocide bc the Bosniak (and broader Bosnian) communities now explicitly tie their biological survival to the survival of the BiH state. I’ve called this the Zionist turn in Bosniak-Bosnian political thinking.
The depth of these attitudes is not even wholly captured by the SDA; there is a still harder electorate to their proverbial right. And they’re not “Islamists” as many fear but actually secular nationalists deeply repulsed by the party’s corruption & incompetence.

Bizarre turn in 🇸🇮 🇧🇦 relations. During recent meeting btw SLO President & BiH Presidency, Pahor explicitly asked the Bosnians whether a “peaceful separation” of the country was possible. Komsic & Dzaferovic said of course not, secessionist Dodik said yes. klix.ba/clanak/2104120…
Now, SLO Amb to Sarajevo has been summoned by Komsic over reports that PM Jansa, the EU’s newest illiberal demagogue, sent a non-paper to Brussels speculating about BiH’s dissolution. klix.ba/clanak/2104120…
Jansa denies these reports but it’s worth noting that he is close to Orban who is close to Dodik, and Dodik & his backers in Moscow & Belgrade are obviously is the primary threat to BiH’s territorial integrity. Disturbing games all the same.
