As part of their ongoing revisionist campaign re: the Bosnian War & Genocide, the secessionist regime in BiH's RS entity recently convened two "international commissions" to rewrite the established facts of the Srebrenica Genocide and the Siege of Sarajevo. 🧵
These two specific events were chosen bc they are the most internationally well known features of the Bosnian War & Genocide & the Dodik regime wants to recast their understanding in the global discourse to justify its ongoing political ambitions; namely, secession from BiH.
Their report on the Siege of Sarajevo, which specifically deals with the treatment of ethnic Serbs by BiH govt forces during the siege, was released today. It is rife w/ half-truths, spin, selective sourcing, fabrications, and conspiracism. No surprise.
But the real story is in the authors which the Dodik regime selected to "author" this report. It speaks to the global network of cooks, revisionists, and extremists which have become the vanguard of contemporary Bosnian Genocide denial efforts.
To be clear: BiH govt forces did commit atrocities vs. ethnic Serbs in/around Sarajevo, most infamously the Kazani Pit Killings. But there was never a systematic attempt by the BiH govt to target Serbs (or Croats), as proven at the ICTY & est in the relevant academic literature.
But these reports represent a specific form of genocide denial: their whole purpose is to establish a degree of false equivalence btw the actual, systematic, genocidal intents of the RS/VRS regime & those who resisted its aggression. opendemocracy.net/en/can-europe-…
So, on to the roster: first up is Raphael Israeli. Below is an account of some of his previous work, considered so extremist in its depiction of Palestinians that it was widely rebuked in Israeli society, and by anti-hate organizations in the U.S. like the ADL.
Viktor Bezruchenko, a (former?) Russian officer, does not have much of a public profile, but he has been part of RS & Serbian govt attempts to fabricate the history of the Bosnian Genocide for some time.
Darko Tanaskovic, a Belgrade professor and one of the chief ideologues of anti-Muslim hysteria in Serbia for much of the last few decades. He was one of the signatories of this defense of Milosevic apologist and genocide denier Peter Handke. politika.rs/sr/clanak/4432…
Laurence French is a little known NH-based academic who appears to have only a passing knowledge of BiH or the region and misspelled "Republic of Srpksa" [sic] in his own LinkedIn profile.
Then we have the Italian reporter Giuseppe Zaccaria, who I understand passed away last year, but spent much of the 90s as the go-to mouthpiece of the Milosevic regime and its various proxies.
And finally, there's the French national Patrick Barriot, a former defense witness for Slobodan Milosevic, who has spent years spinning yarns about the decency of Ratko Mladic and the "real" number of victims of the genocide in Srebrenica.
So, this is not only a collection of historical revisionists, it's a collection of illiterates and radicals who have been marginalized within their own societies, but are being rolled out by a pariah regime to re-frame the historical facts of the Bosnian War. Now you know. /x

Wow. BiH media (via SLO) have published leaks of the “dissolution non-paper” but speculate it may, in part, have been drafted by the Hungarians. It envisions near complete partition of BiH btw SRB/CRO but also KOS-ALB unification. vijesti.ba/clanak/532089/…
If it is established that this came from Janša’s cabinet, and/or was written in tandem w/ Budapest, this is a major diplomatic scandal for the EU. Two of its members are gaming-out the partition of a sovereign state & the wholesale reordering of the WB state system. Unacceptable.
This actually much more radical than what Mogherini’s cabinet was pushing viz the KOS-SRB “land swap”, as its proposing partitioning BiH against the will of most of its citizens + Greater ALB, SRB, CRO. A lot more needs to be done here than saying it’s not official EU policy.
A treasured family story for you: during the fascist occupation of BiH in the 1940s, my great-aunt survived a Chetnik massacre in East Bosnia by playing dead, digging herself out of a mass grave, sneaking through the woods for days, then joining up w/ a Partisan resistance cell.
My great-uncle - on my Father’s side - managed to escape recruitment by NDH Home Guard by sneaking out of town on the back of logging truck. His mother’s parting words were “remain honorable” which, upon also joining the Partisans, he interpreted to mean don’t loot dead bodies.
So, when he managed to come upon and kill an Italian officer in the woods a while later, all he took was his pistol, leaving his jewelry, boots etc. That was one of the last stories he told me before he passed away a few yrs back. Still had the weapon too.
I’m disturbed that Dodik’s long-time claims re: the possibility of “peaceful separation” in BiH have clearly found an audience in some EU quarters. An absolutely insane idea; as in 1992-95, vast majority of Bosnians will not abide attempts to partition or dissolve the country. 🧵
If anything, those attitudes have hardened after the Bosnian Genocide bc the Bosniak (and broader Bosnian) communities now explicitly tie their biological survival to the survival of the BiH state. I’ve called this the Zionist turn in Bosniak-Bosnian political thinking.
The depth of these attitudes is not even wholly captured by the SDA; there is a still harder electorate to their proverbial right. And they’re not “Islamists” as many fear but actually secular nationalists deeply repulsed by the party’s corruption & incompetence.
Bizarre turn in 🇸🇮 🇧🇦 relations. During recent meeting btw SLO President & BiH Presidency, Pahor explicitly asked the Bosnians whether a “peaceful separation” of the country was possible. Komsic & Dzaferovic said of course not, secessionist Dodik said yes. klix.ba/clanak/2104120…
Now, SLO Amb to Sarajevo has been summoned by Komsic over reports that PM Jansa, the EU’s newest illiberal demagogue, sent a non-paper to Brussels speculating about BiH’s dissolution. klix.ba/clanak/2104120…
Jansa denies these reports but it’s worth noting that he is close to Orban who is close to Dodik, and Dodik & his backers in Moscow & Belgrade are obviously is the primary threat to BiH’s territorial integrity. Disturbing games all the same.
I want to make clear a few things re: today’s events in BiH’s RS assembly & their formal adoption of what is clearly a program for secession; why it matters, and what may be done about it by local & international actors. 🧵 klix.ba/clanak/2103101…
As I noted y’day, while this formally appears like a (baseless) critique of the OHR, it’s fundamentally an attack on the Dayton Peace Accords and the Bosnian state. The call for “peaceful separation” makes clear the actual aim: RS secession & the dissolution of BiH.
That isn’t new. Dodik has made his intentions clear for yrs; he is explicit in his secessionism. And as I’ve explained before, he’s only grown more brazen bc no one has stood up to him. EU bears particular responsibility here but no one’s hands are clean. balkaninsight.com/2020/03/02/bos…
Secessionist authorities in Bosnia's RS entity - working in tandem w/ the Kremlin - have called for a special session of the RS assembly where they will call for the closure of the OHR & apparently reject every post-1998 change to BiH's political system. vijesti.ba/clanak/527976/…
This is another attempt at dismantling BiH's constitutional regime & undermining the rule of law; secession-lite, using the entire RS govt apparatus to accomplish it. And Germany's self-serving stunt w/ Christian Schmidt is leaving local & international authorities flat-footed.
It's bad enough that Schmidt is widely understood to be an absolute bottom-of-the-barrel pick. But Berlin's unilateral push for his appt has shattered what little coordination existed among international actors in BiH. And now, of course Russia has capitalized on that.
