i have had hundreds of interactions with the police over my life. I have never been arrested. I have never once felt safer as a result of their presence in a situation.
i have never been arrested for the same reason I have never been seriously injured by an angry dog. The same tactics work on both. Your best best bet for safety with with cops is to treat them like violent and unpredictable animals.
this all of course presumes you are white. I would not attempt to give anyone else advice on dealing with the cops.
For those who find this useful; make your movements slow and deliberate. Use a friendly tone. Telegraph every action and clearly state it ahead of time. Keep both eyes on them always.
And for the love of God, keep your hands visible and out of your pockets. Never fucking ever put your hands in your pockets around a cop.

If you are wondering why Texas's electrical grid is on the brink of collapse, it's because Texas is the only of the lower 48 states with its own power grid. The reasons for this boil down to "fuck the federal government."
In 2011, and on other emergency occasions, Texas has had to borrow power from Mexico, who are objectively better neighbors than us.
On the last big winter storm I was here for, much of Dallas lost power for 2 weeks. We had electric workers from like a dozen states come to help.
The message of all this is that Texas's toxic style of libertarianism is not real. "Rugged individualism" repeatedly gets us into trouble and we have to be bailed out by our neighbors.
Anyway, 100,000 people in DFW have to boil their water now because the treatment plant broke.
Goad and Emily stood against Nazis during Unite the Right in Charlottesville, 2017. Joe Biden used footage of them being assaulted in his campaign ads.
But no mainstream politician actually listened to them.
Also @danieleharper and his wonderful podcast I Don't Speak German. @idsgpod. No one put in more work following these people.
Conspiracy theory time: I think Tarrio may have purposefully gotten arrested with two illegal (in D.C.) rifle magazines.
He admitted to destroying property before flying in. He brought exactly two magazines, which is weird.
What if his plan is to challenge D.C. gun laws?
There is a decent chance he would win if such a case made it to the Supreme Court. And more to the point, a big publicized gun rights case would be an opportunity for Tarrio to crowdfund huge amounts of money AND gain more fame.
It is a smarter bet than doing another rally.
Even if SCOTUS never took the case, he would have a pretty decent chance of raising hundreds of thousands of dollars in short order from conservative gun owners spooked about Biden.
I just got back from the Red House eviction resistance occupation in North Portland. I'm not showing pictures of the interior, so here is a nearby business.
The barricades there are the best I've seen this year. Huge, thick, and secured together through a variety of mediums.
The barricades are an example of defense in depth. Most entrances have multiple layers of barricades. There are a variety of different options to dissuade vehicle traffic and police advances.
The quality of construction is quite impressive. It will be an unholy bitch to remove.
The whole occupation covers a couple of blocks. It looks roughly as large as the CHAZ.
One protester told me: "We started off just trying to occupy the area around the house. But that didn't work. So we made it bigger."
