Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai ep.27: I suppose I’ve just been spoiled by the last few weeks, but this felt underwhelming, without much sense of speed in a fight that hinges on it. But there’s still some good bits in there. 3/5 #DragonQuest #ep27 ImageImage
Actually, like with ep.15 I found this one better on rewatch. Maybe animation just looks better on my phone? Although I kind of doubt it.
Galdandy and Borahorn’s defeats in the manga. In the anime, Galdandy’s is a blink or you’ll miss it affair, and Borahorn’s is mostly bloodless. ImageImage
With his tusks gone, Borahorn looks like a big blue dog ImageImage
Borahorn’s breath attack has the extremely on-the-nose name “Cold Breath” (using those exact English words), which for whatever reason the CR subs change to the slightly less on-the-nose “Glacial Breath”. Image
The DQ games have a lot of similar breath techniques, one of which is localized in English as C-C-Cold Breath, so maybe they changed Borahorn’s Cold Breath to avoid confusion? Although if anything it’s more confusing this way.
Weaponsmith Lon Beruk (ロン・ベルク) previously had his name spelt as “Lon Berk” in the Dai Perfect Book, but the kanzenban manga release and CR subs use “Beruk”. The kana spelling matches the German surname Romberg (ロンベルク), although this might be a coincidence. Image
Frustratingly, there are several notable people with the surname Romberg, but they seem to mostly be composers, with no apparent weaponry connect anywhere. Maybe Sanjo was just a fan of one of them? Image
Now I’m imagining a really bulky version of Hyunckel ImageImageImage
Larhart’s technique is the Haken Distall (ハーケンディストール; the spelling “Haken Distall” comes from the Dai Perfect Book). Haken is the German word for “hook”, while “distall” is possibly a corruption of “distortion”, or just comes from “distal” (the opposite of proximal) Image
The CR subs localize this as “Sunder Claw”. Presumably claw comes from haken=hook, meaning sunder stands in for distall. Distal=distant, which relates to sunder via the idea of separation...I guess? It’s not in the games, so I’m not sure why they didn’t keep the original name. Image
It’s a standard battle manga phenomenon, but I still question the physics behind an attack that shatters his armor and cracks the ground behind him, but leaves his actual body unscarred. ImageImage
Next week: Episode of Baran! Image

Age 732: with the Tsufruian war concluded (unless that never happened) and his alliance with Freeza and/or Cold forged, King Vegeta III finds himself a queen and quickly produces an heir: Vegeta IV, the prince of the Saiyans. #HistoryofEver Image
Young Prince Vegeta lives an idyllic childhood playing with Saibaimen, pulling Nappa’s hair out, and exterminating the odd civilization. His few unpleasant memories from this period, long repressed, concern the occasional visits by one of his father’s acquaintances...
On another occasion (or an alternate version of the same occasion, or whatever), Beerus sent King Vegeta out on a fetch quest, but naturally it didn’t end well

The roughs are out for DBS ch.71: “Heeta’s Plan”. Whis asks Goku the biggest difference between him and the angels. “A halo?” No, Whis says it’s how angels are always in the Ultra Instinct state. Goku shouldn’t need to transform to do it. dragonball.news/news/i21041400… ImageImageImage
Whis says if Goku’s heart/mind were stable, his body could move on its own regardless of his form. If Goku can manage UI in his regular state, it’ll take care of his stamina problem. Then he can save the transformed version of UI as a trump card. ImageImageImage
Whis tells Goku and Vegeta that when training, their rivals are themselves; they should always strive to outdo their previous selves. He also mentions that something has happened. Goku: “Is it a new strong enemy?” But Whis still isn’t sure if it’s an “enemy” or not... Image

Age 731, or earlier: in a rut after killing the goose that laid the golden scouters, the Saiyans team up with other aliens to further their development, a path that finally leads them to Freeza. Or maybe they started off working for Cold. Depends on who you ask. #HistoryofEver
The date 731 comes from the Daizenshuu 7 timeline (reused in the GT Perfect File timeline and elsewhere), which states that the Saiyans join up with Freeza around then, right after the Tsufruian war of 720 to 730 (and not long before Freeza terminates their relationship in 737) ImageImage
In contrast, DBS: Broly presents the Saiyans as initially working for Cold, before Freeza is handed the reigns through good ol’ fashioned nepotism. Bardock says that Cold “subjugated the Saiyans by force”, although this was apparently “a long time ago”

Age 712 (yet again): Omori’s time machine wasn’t the only science project to end in disaster during this era. Over in movie land, a sudden weather shift buries the lab of Dr. Uiro (Wheelo) when his brain gets a little too big for his britches. #HistoryofEver
Both the common people and even Uiro’s own assistant Dr. Cochin attribute this lousy weather to divine judgment (who knows? Maybe Kami did something for a change), but thankfully Cochin comes up with an absolutely foolproof way of saving his master’s life.
(If Kami or some other god were involved, it might explain why a super genius needs the dragon balls just to melt some ice)

Age 712 or earlier: while Earth scientists dick around with capsules and time machines, on Planet Plant the elite Saiyan Nappa is born around this time. Also born around now (give or take a decade or two) is King Vegeta III, plus the low-class mook Bardock. #HistoryofEver
Let’s start with ages: Nappa was over 50 when he died in Age 762 according to his Daizenshuu 7 bio, placing his birth in 712 or before. We don’t have official ages or birth years for Bardock/the King, and Saiyans being youthful up to 80 makes judging based on looks a crapshoot
Still, Raditz looks about 10 in DB Minus, so we might lazily assume Bardock was at least 30 when he got blown up/time warped/brainwashed, putting his birth at ~710 or earlier, about the same as Nappa. King Vegeta’s probably older, if he kicks off the Saiyan/Tsufruian war in 720

Age 712: West City College graduate Dr. Briefs invents a revolutionary system for storing objects of any size inside tiny capsules. He then goes on to found a corporation for producing these capsules. Its name escapes me. #HistoryofEver
Dr. Briefs’ life story is outlined in rather surprising detail in his Daizenshuu 7 bio, including the tidbits that he majored in physical chemistry and got his doctorate from West City College (as you might expect), then founded Capsule Corp after inventing the capsule (likewise)
(物理化学/physical chemistry is possibly a typo for 物理科学/physical science, since both are read as butsuri kagaku, although I’ll leave it to you to judge which if either seems a better fit for developing capsules)
