Here is a summary of today’s update: AB Seasonal influenza season has ended w/0 reported cases. Thank you for getting immunized & protecting each other from influenza, #COVID19AB & other respiratory illnesses. This success reminds us we can beat COVID if we work together. (1/7)
Over the last 24hrs, we have ID’d 1,081 new cases & completed about 12K tests. Our + rate is 8.9%. We ID’d 705 additional VoC cases in the last 24hrs. Variants currently represent about 52% % of our active cases. (2/7)
There are active alerts/outbreaks in 453 schools w/ 2,653 cases linked to schools since Jan 11. We are seeing a sharp rise in school-aged ABs & other age groups, often linked to social gatherings. This reinforces the importance of following measures before & after school. (3/7)
402 ppl are in hosp, incl 88 in ICU. Hospitalizations & cases are rising. If we do not see growth slow soon, further measures may be required. Sadly, 3 deaths were reported in the last 24hrs. My condolences go to their family, friends & anyone dealing w/loss at this time. (4/7)
We have admin 900K+ vaccine doses.1.7M ppl are now eligible. Anyone 16+ w/a medical condition at alberta.ca/vaccine & 2C healthcare workers can now book. We are making more appts avail as vaccines arrive. The rest of 2C will open in the coming weeks, please be patient. (5/7)
Research shows the 1st dose of the vaccines now being offered in AB provide considerable protection against infection. The 2nd dose increases protection even more. These vaccines work, even against variants. (6/7)
We have to keep working together. The recipe for getting safely to summer is simple: we need to reduce cases sharply by limiting in-person interactions as much as possible every day. We need to stop the spread for just a few more months so that vaccines can do their work. (7/7)

Case numbers may fluctuate from day to day. We need to see a downward trend in indicators some of which, like hospitalizations, lag. This means that the actions we take today will reflect in the numbers we see 1 or 2 weeks from now. (3/4)
