Anti-racists have such conflicting attitudes over former Neo Nazis and ex fascists.
I’ve been die-hard, actively anti my whole life, targeted personally since I was a kid, etc., so I understand much of the skepticism and cynicism, but —

Some of the most committed, generous, and helpful people fighting white supremacy today ARE formers.
Yes, treat disavowal / disengagement claims with caution, demand accountability in word as well as action, and no one is required to forgive, but know this:

I often see all formers treated as:
1) inherently untrustworthy and beyond redemption even if their help is accepted
2) scientific “specimens” by researchers and academics - like their sole purpose is to be studied as useful oddities
(#2 makes me extremely angry, btw)

I don’t trust all formers (not by a long shot — Heimbach and co., looking at you), but:
3 people I love beyond words are former white supremacists, 2 of whom once tried to kill me (way before I knew them). Today, they’re family to me.
And their dedication puts me to shame.

To sum up - no one is obligated to forgive, or even interact with formers.
But as for me?
Formers who once actively worked towards my death have helped me A LOT — not just in the anti-racist fight, but also inadvertently, in dismantling my own unrecognized biases.
