(1) FedEx shooting, Indianapolis, 4/15/2021.

Police say at least 8 people are dead in a mass shooting at a FedEx facility near the airport. At least 8 others were transported to area hospitals, while multiple others went to other hospitals. The alleged shooter is now dead.
(2) A 9 minute Police briefing:

(3) Some recent words of mine concerning the prevention and reduction of mass shooting related harm:

(4) Because of a number of factors, violent crime such as mass shootings, domestic or workplace violence, and domestic terrorism, is increasing at the moment.

No one can accurately predict when this trend will change. The need to review your personal safety planning is urgent.
(5) I go into some detail about planning here.

Along with manmade disasters, the 2021 hurricane season will probably be worse than average. 6 weeks to go.
(6) You can find more tips about preparing for incidents at the links below.

(7) Updates on the FedEx Indy shooting here. Kudos to the Indy Star for dropping the paywall; I hope more outlets do that in future.

19yo Brandon Scott Hole, worked there in 2020 & had been suicidal a year ago, & Mom had reported it to police.

indystar.com/story/news/cri…
(8) FBI investigated him & it appears the case was closed: Please note we will learn more about this in the coming days.

IMO there are tens of thousands of Americans right now who could be a threat in their community. FBI has 30,000 or so staff & very broad responsibilities.
(9) I'm seeing signs that some in the media are immediately looking to see if there was any racial motive. CNN has pointed out some of the victims were Sikhs (most Sikhs are of South Asian descent.)

To someone outside the USA this practice seems bizarre.
(10) The US has always been a racially diverse country & esp. so since 1945. All our English-speaking countries are diverse, & like most Americans, most of us are used to living in a diverse society.

I do know why CNN is reporting on the religion of the victims, of course.
(11) CNN is of the left; other outlets are of the right; and both sides salivate at the chance to make political hay out of every tragedy.

Anyone who uses common sense knows that not every shooting is race-based. If it turns out the shooter showed evidence of racism, okay.
(12) It may turn out he carried out a murder-suicide at his former workplace bc he had a severe mental illness. I don't KNOW, & nor do you.

I can, however, speak from experience about seeing a racially motivated mass shooting near my home.
(13) On March 15, 2019 a mass murderer targeted two mosques in Christchurch, NZ, killing 51 innocents & injuring 50 more. He was apprehended & pleaded guilty. We will keep him locked up.

He had referred to the people as "kebabs" & he hated them for their race & their religion.
(14) Based on my upbringing, decades of life, & that incident, I never tolerate racism or religious bigotry. 3/15 made me step it up a notch & take even more interest in the reporting of & law enforcement action against political violence / domestic terrorism. Of any flavor.
(15) False claims of racism do nothing to help in the fight against it.

Regardless of motive, this mass murder event in Indianapolis is beyond tragic for all those directly affected.

My message is to do what you can to reduce risk to you & your family. It CAN happen to you.
(16) This website is a handy source of info early on in a case like this. There are some parts I would take issue with but the useful facts are worth it.

Interesting that police were involved with him in 2013, when he was about 11-12.

(17) In the last few mins I've seen there was a shooting at Briarwood Mall in Ann Arbor, Michigan. One person is stable after being injured, & the mall has now been made safe.

Always take a breath before reacting politically. Focus on the main threats. Seek facts not hearsay.
(18) At FedEx the first 911 call was received at 11.07pm. Shift change was 11.30pm. A witness referred to being "between" shifts. Some were on a meal break.

It's often hard to fill a 3rd shift. Employers may offer a double shift to workers. The pandemic has led to shortages...
(19) In all our pandemic-affected countries there are new & different kinds of labor shortage, even in a big country like the USA.

I'm NOT alleging this shooter was stressed out by it. I'm commenting on the overall workplace environment, everywhere.
(20) There is a public interest in the national issue of workplace health and safety during the pandemic. Especially in the healthcare sector. FedEx is part of the transportation & services sector. International borders are also a part of this threat picture.
(21) Workers in all kinds of industries are at increased risk of all the usual health and safety issues that occur in the workplace. I'm thinking of the victims and survivors.

Employers have a duty of care toward staff, their families, customers, partners, & investors.
(22) These are the kinds of issues that should be getting attention, instead of going looking for gun law and race-based angles that might not even be relevant.

What a gorgeous, special picture of the most photographed couple in the world, having (probably) climbed a 1607ft hill near Balmoral at the age of 82 and 77, respectively.

Good morning, UK brothers and sisters. Today our national grandpa is laid to rest. #ThankYouPhilip🇬🇧🇳🇿
The above pic would've been taken around August 2003 (the annual visit to Balmoral.)

Behind the cam was their favorite daughter-in-law Sophie Wessex, who would give birth to Louise on 8 November that year. Do you remember? Mum & baby could have died. Eternally thankful.🙏 Image
Now Louise is all grown up and viewing the floral tributes displayed inside the castle grounds. Staff moved them each night from the gates, to try to discourage people from gathering during the pandemic. Image

(1) Thread 2: FedEx Indy mass shooting April 15, 2021

I use threading to keep track of my tweets on a subject. My threads about this incident include breaking news about what happened, and my thoughts on wider policy issues.

Thread 1:
(2) Of course, gun laws ARE relevant when discussing a mass shooting incident. It's just that most of what is said is factually inaccurate and/or irrelevant concerning why the shooting occurred, and how best to reduce the risk of future harm.
(3) Examples of typical factual inaccuracies:

Automatic or "machine" guns are illegal outside the military. If you think you heard one, it was probably a SEMI-automatic gun.

"Assault rifles" don't exist. Use other terms for them.

(1) Video released in the last hour. Lori Lightfoot "calling for peace" in this way will lead to the opposite result. Actions speak louder than words. Will the police be properly equipped & supported tonight?

RIP Adam Toledo. IMO the case that said it all was Elijah McClain...
(2) Don't misunderstand me. I'm not saying one tragedy is more important than another. Whichever side of this issue you're on, it's advisable to learn about as many recent cases as you can. The details might surprise you.

IMO we all want to see less violence in the aftermath.
(3) The far left want to "burn it all down" & in some cities they partly achieve that, at least figuratively. The far right also want to figuratively burn it all down, in terms of the country's institutions like the DOJ, FBI.

The more violent you are, the less support you get. ImageImage

(1) Thread: The left and right are talking past each other concerning racism, by not defining terms at the start.

IDK about you, but I had it drummed into me at high school and college that the first thing you do in an essay is ensure you have understood and defined the terms.
(2) I'm listening to this song as I write. The truth is: Toby Keith is not and likely never was a Trump supporter. Mainstream country music is like mainstream Hollywood: Liberal. Sure, there are a few that fight the stereotype, but not many.

(3) I remember watching the video of the event & concert at the Lincoln Memorial ahead of the Trump inauguration in 2017. Toby Keith & band performed a great set, & when he said "President Obama, thank you for your service" the 2017 me bristled a little. I shouldn't have worried.

(1) Saw this in an @AndrewYang fan tweet:

"[Democrats are] genuinely terrified of an anti-political hero like Andrew Yang actually making politics transparent, user friendly, and real again."

Honey, this is exactly the kind of lie that got Trump elected in 2016. Learn from...
(2) Learn from the mistakes of others so you don't have to learn from your own mistakes.

An "anti-political hero" comes in many forms. None of them can ever deliver on such a promise. Trump didn't. Bernie Sanders didn't. Rand Paul didn't.
(3) The main reason I chose political science as my college major was to learn what makes a politician, party, or country successful and what does not.

Comparative Politics is a really fascinating sub-discipline of pol sci. You learn about lots of different countries & systems.

(1) HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh passed away today at the age of 99 years.

He was an incredible person, much loved and respected in the countries of the Commonwealth, including New Zealand.

10 June 1921 - 9 April 2021
(2) I will share some random thoughts and memories in this thread, including little-known anecdotes and facts about Prince Philip's long life.

In this 1928 photo his parents are in the center, with his four older sisters around them.
(3) Prince Philip's early life tells you a lot about 19th & 20th century European history.

In 1863 his grandfather, 17yo Prince William of Denmark became King of the Hellenes (Greece) & took the name George I.

That's why in 1921 Philip was born a prince of Greece & Denmark.
