(1) Saw this in an @AndrewYang fan tweet:

"[Democrats are] genuinely terrified of an anti-political hero like Andrew Yang actually making politics transparent, user friendly, and real again."

Honey, this is exactly the kind of lie that got Trump elected in 2016. Learn from...
(2) Learn from the mistakes of others so you don't have to learn from your own mistakes.

An "anti-political hero" comes in many forms. None of them can ever deliver on such a promise. Trump didn't. Bernie Sanders didn't. Rand Paul didn't.
(3) The main reason I chose political science as my college major was to learn what makes a politician, party, or country successful and what does not.

Comparative Politics is a really fascinating sub-discipline of pol sci. You learn about lots of different countries & systems.
(4) Maybe my interest in comparative politics is because I'm a New Zealander who grew up outside the global center of Europe and North America... we are used to dropping off the edge of the map.
(5) This is actually how I grew up thinking about the world, and probably everyone else in the Asia-Pacific did too.

IMO there is so much to be gained from learning about life outside your own country. Studying history is essential, too.
(6) World history is brimming with examples of politicians who claimed their outsider status was the one magic ingredient that would make it all better.

Every one of them lied.

An outsider might win, now and then, but it doesn't last.
(7) That Reagan quote, in context, is about the main reason the founding fathers and mothers made the RKBA the second amendment to the US Constitution.

In the 1980s the archetype we all kept in mind was Hitler's rise to power. In recent years even that became politicized.
(8) During the four years in which I supported Trump (always on the condition that if he betrayed certain fundamental promises, I was out), I saw from his opponents Hitler reference after Hitler reference. Crying wolf so many times is one of the reasons 1/6 was able to happen.
(9) Even I, was called a Nazi on Twitter. At the time (2016) I just laughed. In 2021, I need to write some blog posts about the ideology behind actual 1920s German Nazism, the current Democratic party in the US, and the current Republican party in the US. (They're not Nazi.)
(10) Trump's ideology isn't Nazi, either. But there are similarities in some of the tactics he uses, that I think we all need to get our heads around.

Andrew Yang isn't Nazi. But he is offering voters a dishonest vision in much the same way lone politicians always have.
(11) The reason "outsider" Trump failed to keep his promises is that, ultimately, he did not co-operate with the rest of the GOP.

I remained a supporter until near the end bc he appeared to be co-operating on several important issues, like tax reform, originalist judges etc.
(12) For those who can keep an open mind, Trump's legacy should be that going against the party doesn't work, & indeed causes untold damage to everyone affected.

Right now the only winners in this situation are Democrat politicians. D voters are losing along with everyone else.
(13) Yes, Einstein, political parties are corrupt.

But one man or woman can't fix anything on their own. (Maybe as a Mayor, but a case can be made against even that.)

We are stuck with political parties. And size matters.
(14) Whenever I see complaints about this or that thing the Democrat-controlled White House, Senate or House is doing, I just remember how they got all that power.

Because Trump failed to take advice from others, even to the point of discarding core duties like basic security.
(15) It certainly wasn't bc anyone "stole" the election. I know it can be painful to admit that. After the Electoral College voting, & the hail Mary SCOTUS attempt led by TX AG Paxton in December, I started to accept reality.

Trump had ample opportunity to contest the result.
(16) Trump himself made me stop supporting him. His real self came to the fore. And he's still doing it. Like Nixon, he will almost certainly go to his grave claiming he did nothing wrong. And Nixon's literal & moral crimes were minor in comparison.

This note appeared in 2016:
(17) At the time, Trump supporters liked that Nixon had told him that in 1987. I think the letter reveals a lot about Nixon, and Trump.

They were both very good at political marketing. Many of their policy achievements were brilliant. But they threw it all away.
(18) I hope it's clear that I didn't write this thread to comment on Andrew Yang one way or another. It was about the belief that one person could make politics "transparent, user friendly, and real."

You and me have to make it that way ourselves. By staying skeptical.

(1) HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh passed away today at the age of 99 years.

He was an incredible person, much loved and respected in the countries of the Commonwealth, including New Zealand.

10 June 1921 - 9 April 2021
(2) I will share some random thoughts and memories in this thread, including little-known anecdotes and facts about Prince Philip's long life.

In this 1928 photo his parents are in the center, with his four older sisters around them.
(3) Prince Philip's early life tells you a lot about 19th & 20th century European history.

In 1863 his grandfather, 17yo Prince William of Denmark became King of the Hellenes (Greece) & took the name George I.

That's why in 1921 Philip was born a prince of Greece & Denmark.

(1) There's been a shooting at a workplace in Bryan, Texas. One reported killed, four injured, plus an LEO reportedly injured when the suspect was later apprehended. It's early on, so confirmed facts are scarce.

edition.cnn.com/2021/04/08/us/…
(2) I'm never interested early on in finding out the race of the suspect, victims, or others caught up in a shooting. It comes out later on anyway, so I wait before commenting on that, if at all.

IMO gun-controllers deploy their initial talking points about guns, not nec. race.
(3) I say this because I think that many gun rights activists on Twitter focus right away on the racial (& or religious) hypocrisy of the gun-controllers.

IMO in most cases that is a secondary issue. I think it's better to focus on the gun and security-related aspects first.

(1) Thread: Hatch Act breach by Lynne Patton, Trump ally.

Yes, both sides routinely breach the Hatch Act & other significant laws that aim to limit the abuse of government power.

Regardless of who does it the most, I support enforcing the law wherever needed. #NationOfLaws
(2) Lynne Patton's dishonesty wasn't just using her HUD role to make a campaign ad for the 2020 GOP convention.

She also lied to the faces of the NYC Housing Authority tenants, that the video would not be used for partisan purposes.

That's REALLY bad, IMO.
(3) I have worked in similar gov agencies in New Zealand, & preventing issues like these are a daily occurrence. Patton abused both tenants & staff. EVERYONE working government knows that being this partisan and abusive is not allowed. Even for political appointees.

(1) Thread: Politics and religion in early 2021.

The head of the LDS (Mormon) church,#PresidentOaks, gave a speech today that ruffled quite a few feathers.

I decided to write about some examples of MAGA responses posted by
(2) If you're new to my threads, I'm a female New Zealander & lifelong observer of US politics. A non-fundamentalist Christian dismayed by the brainwashing of voters at any point on the political spectrum. I've been given a prodigal daughter welcome home to my faith 3 times.
(3) That means I occupy a pretty unique place on the political and religious spectrums. I learned all the arguments made by anti-theist atheists. My approach to religion is "live and let live." Which is exactly what the US founding fathers and mothers had in mind for the country.

(1) Thread: Another celeb critically ill because of drug addiction.

He's 50 year old DMX aka Earl Simmons and he's hospitalized near his home in White Plains, NY.

From his biggest album, in 2000:

(2) I've witnessed first hand the insanity that can result from drug addiction and I've had to learn more about it than I ever wanted to. This quote sums up my current views nicely:
(3) I wish the best for DMX, his loved ones, and his fans.

Just as I did for Prince, George Michael, Whitney Houston, Amy Winehouse, and countless more celebs like them.

I want us to learn from their experiences.

(1) Thread 2: Vehicle ramming attack at US Capitol 4/2/21

My first thread on the subject is:

Message for MAGA folk: I am now Ex-MAGA and I will NOT move on from talking about 1/6.

accountability.gop/about/
(2) I ended Thread 1 with this information:

An inconvenient fact for MAGA world is that this Capitol attacker and Ashlee Babbitt had a lot in common. Read this: heavy.com/news/noah-gree…
(3) My apologies for misspelling the name of Ashli Babbitt.

On 1/6 when her name was released I looked to see if she had a Twitter account. I found it and took several screenshots, including this one:
