Many/most USians have some ancestral story about how their family got one over the immigration inspectors way back when. Heck, even the Trumps got here that way.

Immigration fraud is what they call in criminal law “malum prohibitum,” aka bad because it’s against the law. But it’s not “malum in se,” aka bad because it’s inherently wrong, like beating up little old ladies or stealing someone’s life savings. So context really matters.
