A THREAD to help you get AND keep students back/on task without getting into a debate/confrontation/argument....
Try This...
Firstly before speaking, expect and wait for silence.
Make it a mutual thing. When you talk, silence, when they talk, others are silent. (When your TA talks to the class, silence). Work on it. Routine based. Get over the bumps, but make it a minimum expectation... then...
Explain your task.
Ask for at least students to repeat back what your task is.
Then anonymously challenge. (TLAC)
Stay still.
Stood up.
And say, “we have 4 people who have not got started...”
And “now down to 1 person...”
And “excellent we are ALL on task!”
Then...
Go around the room, instead of saying, why aren’t you doing your work, say “can I help you get started?” Or “shall we work on the first question together.”
Then...
Use PROXIMAL PRAISE...
Say well done and other forms of praise to students in immediate vicinity of others gone slightly off task, thus remind those they need to get back on track... or...
Keep “catching students being good.”
Don’t wait for the “eyes in the back of your head” scenario.
Avoid it by noticing where things are going well. You don’t need an extensive commentary and don’t need to praise minimum expectations either... then...
Agree in advance with “key” students, non verbal warnings, this could be as simple as a highlighter on a desk or you tapping their book. This when pre agreed together indicates a warning, as they are not focussing as you want. “Reprimand in private.” Or...
Stop the class for some quick feedback/checkin.
Silence.
You speak.
At this point say, “usually the following question crops up here...
anybody know the answer... then... reset.
All to get back on with work.... you stand and count down.
Then...
Avoid using language like it’s too loud, woah way too loud, volume is rising too much, ensure you’ve stated the expected noise level in the first place and you’ve explained WHY such noise level is needed.
trythisteaching.com/2013/06/noise-… Also...
Ensure you’ve made clear how long the task should take and WHY you’ve given that much time.
Avoid using, if you don’t do this, then this will happen...
Use tasks as a checklist of completion... remember...
Set actions as a command, not a request, so instead of,
Will you... can you... is it ok...
state, please do... thank you...
and...
Remember this is all routine based.
It takes time.
It can be achieved.
Use names.
Be direct.
Be clear.
Confident.
Use your policy.

THREAD. This year as Raising Standards Lead ive taken over the running of Parents/Carers’ evenings. Here is a thread about running virtual video/ evenings and what I have learnt. Maybe helpful to others who will have to do this...
Firstly update your website and make clear all evenings will be virtual. Add details about the platform you have chosen and system requirements.
Think about getting a digital access survey out to find out how accessible a virtual evening will be...
Ensure as admin you know the system inside out. Ensure the system you have selected has already made help guides and a support system. We have used @schoolscloud which has been brilliant. Lots of written support and a dedicated phone line.

I don’t mean for this to sound like I’m a kill joy etc. But society has accepted vegetarians / vegans. But still kinda look at us non alcohol drinkers as weird. Especially when the Friday night chill out doesn’t involve wine or gin... just remember some of us...
Can’t drink or choose not to drink. And that’s ok! As ok as it is that you choose to drink. :) 💕
Anddddd pls remember when splitting bills, if you choose to divide it, remember the non drinker shouldn’t have to cover all your drinks! Ha

*REMEMBER*
When somebody is highlighting their plight/difficulty/issue, it’s *NEVER* the right time to say, but what about...
Stand in solidarity, show support, then raise your action too. Together is better than also.
I could have been better at this in the past and I have learnt. I will try to be better in the future.
Let me be clearer, if somebody is challenging the lack of representation of equitable diversity within an organisation saying what about LGBT isn’t right then, if somebody is saying what about LGBT rights, talking about gender isn’t right then. If somebody is talking about...

Love your religion, culture and heritage.
Involve yourself in others lives.
Keep a tidy house.
Never be late.
Don’t look scruffy.
Respect your elders and treat young ones like you do oils have waned tk have been treated.

THREAD.
Today will be a scorcher.
Here are some ways to remain cool throughout the day and upcoming evening.
Firstly, keep your curtains shut in rooms upstairs, prone to get lots of sunlight, that will prevent the room from heating up....
If you can use a fan, place a washing up bowl of iced water in front of it. To ensure the air that’s being circulated is cool...
At night, open your windows and lightly dampen your curtains.

I’m moving out of my first home today into my second home. I am so grateful to Allah for providing us with the opportunities to be able to do so. I am so appreciative to all that have believed in me to come and work at their institutions. I am so happy. Please send positivity.
I grew up in a house, with my siblings, in an area, notorious for being “rough.” I grew up happy, supported and the community spirit was amazing. I will never let anybody tell me my area was “horrid/scary” etc. But US locals do joke about making it “out.”
I wholeheartedly believe that through education we can provide each other with the chances to create better chances for ourselves and our loved ones. It’s not about where you come from, it’s about where you’re going. inshAllah.
