Friends, let me tell you about my experience not even an hour ago with Walmart Grocery. If ableism upsets you, this thread is not for you.
Relevant info: I live on the @dominguezHills campus in an apartment. Part of Covid-19 restrictions is restricting visitors to our campus. Residential staff have been gracious enough to allow deliveries so I can get food every week.
I placed my order like I always do, and my order was on its way. The driver, who I will name with no regret, was Sharron J. The trouble started when he arrived at my location. He contued to interrupt me while I was speaking, getting more frustrated as I spoke.
At one point, he shouted at me that ?all of this was too much" and hung up on me when I tried to explain. A nice passerby even informed him that he was at the wrong exit, to which he let out a frustrated sigh and slammed his car door.
When he arrived at the correct gate, he called me and SCREAMED at me to come "GET YOUR FUCKING FOOD" because he was frustrated and he apparently rang the office many times.
At this point, I am controlling my anger because he wasn't listening to me from the beginning, then started screaming at the top of his lungs. At this point, I stopped being calm and shouted back at him. Next tweet.
I raised my voice over him screaming obscenities at me to tell him that I couldn't go get the groceries because I am totally blind and have a service dog. That many groceries wasn't feasible for me to carry. And his response? "Oh my God you're fucking kidding me, you bitch."
At this point, I was stunned and he hung up. I've never been driven to tears by customer service before. I called the customer service line and they assured me he would never work with me again. But for me, that's not enough.
It should never be acceptable for someone representing a company to be so rude, belligerent, and degrading. He must have been let in by security, because he left my groceries at the door only after pounding repeatedly on the doorbell and storming off.
I cannot even tell you how scared I was to open the door when he was banging on it, so I didn't. I stayed on the line with customer service and they refunded me $7.99 for the delivery. But that's not enough.
I felt like such a burden, an inconvenience to this guy who was hired to make deliveries. I'm not sorry my blindness is an inconvenience for anyone, not even him. But I should never EVER be reduced to tears because I can't do something.
I should never be AFRAID of opening my door because a man is so angry that he can't control himself. If I wasn't needing Walmart's services and their ability to use my SNAP benefits, I would never go back. But guess what? I will have to, because they carry what I need.
.@walmart, @walmarthelp what are you doing to ensure that your employees and partnered services are nondiscriminatory? Disabled people like myself should NEVER fear opening their doors for groceries because we're some sort of "inconvenience".
I promise you, we are well aware of our disabilities. I am well aware of my blindness. But I won't let anyone scream at me like that, ever. @walmart @walmarthelp You need to do better. A $8 refund will not fix this. It won't fix anything. #ally #blindness
I am not okay. I do not feel okay. I'm scared, angry, and anxious. I don't know how to feel safe and secure ordering groceries from them ever, but I will have to, because it's so hard to find stores that deliver and allow benefits to be used.
