Wars are usually fought against adversaries that are also humans. So the strategies and tactics that have been developed are tied to human behavior.
There are some strategies and tactics that are independent of human behavior and are useful for any adversary. Can you identify which ones are universal in Sun Tzu's Art of War?
This is important to know because in humanity's war against the #covid19 virus we seem to be unaware or even forgotten how to wage a war against an unseen exponential mutating adversary.
In the game Starcraft, there are 3 races that are at war. Each race has a different set of strategies and are a consequence of their existing capabilities. The virus is analogous to the Zerg. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/StarCraft…
The problem with humanity is that it does not seem to know how to act against an unseen enemy. Humanity seems to be unable to execute a coordinated action against the virus. It's much worse where groups of humanity are deliberately undermining the efforts of other groups.
Modern man seems to be so acclimated and spoiled by convenience that any effort for a temporary behavioral change is met with stiff stubborn resistance.
This is perhaps because the media has desensitized the true horrors of the vaccine. If you had the experience of first responders and medical staff then you would respond very differently from this crisis.
Many have been in the trenches of this war for more than a year now. It is no different from the reality of servicemen who have been fighting the 'war on terrorism' for several decades. It is unseen by the general population.
What is not seen becomes out of mind. Why the US collectively ignore the problem of mass shooting is because the consequences (i.e. dead bodies) are never shown to the general public. You cannot drive urgency if you cannot display the horror.

I've often wondered how we are able to separate the memories in our dreams from our memories of reality. I often find in my dreams to go back to a familiar place in the past that has a distinct layout. But that place is not a real place.
Why is it when we are awake that we can make the distinction between memories that are real and memories that were created in dreams?
Why are we aware that the memories forged in virtual reality are also not real?

It's a war and sometimes you win by making swift decisions without having all the information being available. Not all decisions have the luxury of having all the information available.
Even in vaccine development, the manufacturer had to make a decision on how many shots, the dosage amount, and the storage requirements. These were unknown at the time prior to testing.
Pfizer/BioNTech took the conservative route by (1) extreme low temp storage (2) two shots and (3) higher dosage. They got deployed first. But clearly, deployment was more expensive than the alternatives.

The black box of how everything you interact with is going to become exponentially opaque. That is why people are unable to properly reason about causality and instead fall into conspiracy theories that are more intuitive than the real explanation!
Without years of studying how things work, one cannot understand the reality that humans have invented. It is also very different having grown up in the development of technology. You actually experience and have time to digest how technologies emerge.
But how does it feel to be someone where the technology was invented before you were born. It is kind of like how people who study biology. You don't have a damn clue of how it even works!

The developments in science are so cool that they can only lead to more young people interested in careers in science. Unfortunately, as a society, we have to back up this ambition with funding so they can make a decent living in their vocation.
I wish I could do science full time. It is absolutely true that to make real progress, people have to be doing science full time. Most scientists are encumbered with having to do a ton of administrivia.
To do science well you have to be unencumbered. Not just from the bureaucracy but also from the groupthink that pervades most institutions and fields. Unfortunately only a few are financially wealthy enough to do this.

I guess when you see this, then you have to finally throw away any notion of glory in fighting ground battles. It's going to be a terrible situation for any human being to be involved in.
The whole mystique of guns and wearing body armor isn't going to be compelling if you are against automation that looks entirely different from humans. It reveals that going to battle is like volunteering to go in. a meat grinder.
The only way humans will voluntarily shy away from war is when they become aware of the horrors of war. In earlier times, everyone was more gung ho because they could not imagine how dehumanizing it actually is.

Interesting conjecture, aligns with one of my theories. join.substack.com/p/is-this-the-…
Specifically this one: medium.com/intuitionmachi…
Where I actually differ from the idea is on how it related to biological cognition. Yes, memory is indeed digital in origin (they use the word numbers which is terrible!). But brain cognition isn't like conventional software, it's more like a collective economic model.
