BREAKING: @AOC and @EdMarkey just introduced The Civilian Climate Corps Act of 2021.

The program expands President Biden's American Jobs Plan to provide an additional 1.5 million Americans with jobs fixing the climate crisis that pay at least $15/hr.

twitter.com/i/broadcasts/1…
The Civilian Conservation Corps Act of 2021 will achieve two goals at once.

1. It will move the country towards full employment by giving 1.5 million Americans a good paying job, and

2. It will help communities respond to climate change and transition to a clean economy.
CCC Corps-members will receive at least $15/hour, health care coverage, and services such as transportation, housing, and childcare.

They'll also be eligible for educational grants of $25,000 per year of service for further education or to pay down student debt.
We've done this before.

During the Great Depression, FDR created a Civilian Conservation Corps to put people to work improving their communities.

It was one of the most popular programs of the New Deal. Thousands of projects the corps worked on still stand to this day.
President Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps:

- Employed 3,000,000 people over 10 years
- Built the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Big Bend National Park in Texas
- Created 711 new state parks
- Planted 3.5 billion trees
- Spent 6.5 million days fighting fires
@AOC + @EdMarkey’s Civilian Conservation Corps updates FDR's New Deal legacy for today.

Just as we defeated the Nazis and the Great Depression, we can defeat white supremacy and the climate crisis.

We can put people to work doing what needs to be done.
The goal of the CCC is to help participants find good, union jobs.

All corps-members will be provided with a job and career pathway during their service and will receive vocational training. The corps will prioritize union membership and registered pre-apprenticeship curricula.
The CCC will administer a large national service program that provides grants to the existing network of over 130 local and state service and conservation corps.

New service projects will be developed in partnership with local community organizations and labor unions.
CCC work will:

- Reduce carbon emissions
- Enable a transition to renewable energy
- Build healthier and more resilient communities
- Implement conservation projects with proven climate benefits
- Help communities recover from climate disasters

BREAKING: India has just set a new global record for daily COVID-19 infections in a single country: 312,731 in 24 hours.

Virus deaths and cases are spiking worldwide from new, more transmittable variants.

President Biden must #FreeTheVaccine so we can end the pandemic for all. Image
The global vaccination effort is making progress, but there is still a massive shortage of vaccines. US and EU drug companies can only manufacture so much at a time.

More than 100 nations have asked the @wto to let them manufacture it themselves.

But the US is blocking them.
President Biden can save millions of lives around the world without taking a single dose of vaccine away from Americans.

He just needs to support a waiver of global patent protection laws, so poorer countries can manufacture the vaccine themselves.

Tomorrow, President Biden’s Postal Service board nominees will testify before the Senate.

They need to be asked about how Amazon wields its private power and influence over USPS, a federal agency that’s meant to serve the public good. The details are alarming.
Amazon holds immense sway over the Postal Service.

It gets discount prices on shipping parcels through USPS, including shipping on Sundays when standard mail isn't delivered.

Sometimes even your mail is delayed so USPS can deliver Amazon packages.
postaltimes.com/postalnews/ama…
Amazon’s contract with USPS isn’t public. Congress can demand disclosure of it. We do know that in 2019 Amazon drove $3.9 billion in revenue and $1.6 billion in profit for USPS.

But Amazon isn't just a huge customer of USPS—it’s a growing competitor too.

Today, White House @PressSec Jen Psaki stated that the President does not support congressional efforts to legalize marijuana.

Biden's position "isn't the same as what the House and Senate have proposed," she said.
91% of Americans believe cannabis should be legalized in some form and 61% of Americans believe it should be legal for recreational use.

It's time for President Biden to support legalization.
Cannabis legalization is a racial justice issue.

Black people are nearly 4x more likely than white people to be arrested for cannabis possession, despite roughly equal usage rates.

The war on drugs is a failed approach that was designed to criminalize Black and brown people.

Our justice system is in crisis.

America’s courts are stacked in favor of corporations.

If we’re going to save it, we need judges who’ve represented real people, not corporations.

@POTUS needs to name public interest lawyers to the federal bench, as @brianefallon explains.
Nearly 60% of circuit court judges were corporate law firm partners, as of 2019.

Judges with corporate backgrounds and prosecutors are more likely to rule against workers in employment lawsuits.

Since John Roberts—a former corporate lawyer—became chief justice in 2005, the Supreme Court has ruled in favor of the Chamber of Commerce 70% of the time.

Union jobs lead to better wages—not just for unionized workers, but for the entire working class.

@EconomicPolicy has a must-read new report showing the erosion of collective bargaining has been costing working people money for forty years.
The share of workers covered by a union contract fell from 27.0% in 1979 to just 11.6% in 2019.

The declining unionization rate translates to a loss of $1.56 per hour worked, the equivalent of $3,250 for a full-time, full-year worker.
epi.org/publication/er…
Unions built the middle class by raising the wages of all workers.

The declining rate of unionization in the past 40 years is directly correlated with the collapse of the middle class.

EXCLUSIVE: More Perfect Union has obtained a sweeping 150-page draft GOP voter suppression bill that would severely restrict voting in Ohio.

The legislation includes provisions that are even more radical than Georgia's new voting laws, which have spurred a national backlash.
The new Ohio voter suppression bill would:

- Require voters to provide *two* forms of ID to vote absentee or early
- Create different ID rules for mail and early in-person voting
- Eliminate ALL ballot drop boxes
- Cut the most popular day of early voting
- Ban pre-paid postage
Ohio already has some of the most restrictive voting laws and is one of the most gerrymandered states.

It has purged 2 million voters since 2012 and significantly depressed minority turnout.

These measures will further target low-income voters, young people & people of color.
