ICYMI!:
High point of Lagos Anti-Cultism Law, passed by the Lagos State House of Assembly at a sitting presided over by Rt.hon @mudashiru_obasa, the law which prohibits unlawful societies and cultism has ‘gained’ the assent of the Governor @jidesanwoolu
The lawmakers and other stakeholders in the state, including @PoliceNG NPF, believe that the law would help foster the peace enjoyed by residents in the face of what they considered skirmishes of crime.
Thus, here are few things to know about the new law:

1. Get set for 21 years in jail: The law stipulates 21 years imprisonment for anyone found to be a member of a cult group or solicits for members of an unlawful society.
This punishment also affects anyone who is found to attend meetings of a cult group of illegal society. Meanwhile, the jail term further awaits any person who carries out an illegal act that may result in breach of peace or threat to life and property.
2. It is 15 years in jail for anyone who forms or agrees with anyone to form or organize any unlawful society or cult. This section catches anyone who allows a meeting of cultists to be held in any property under his control.
3. If you compel anyone to join a secret cult, be sure to spend 15 yrs in jail when caught.
If in an attempt to force someone to join the group, a person employs violence, such person faces 15yrs imprisonment. And where it leads to bodily harm, the jail term is 25yr.
Where death is involved, the suspect should be ready to face life imprisonment.

4. You are deemed a cultist if you are found with insignia, banner, documents or any other item belonging to such illegal group.
5. Where you, as a suspected cultist, are found with firearm or a person who is armed while trying to compel someone to join a cultist group, you will face a 15- year jail term.
6. It is 21yrs for you if, as a member of a secret cult or such illegal group, you set fire or use any deadly object in such a manner as to endanger the health and/or property of any person(s). Such deadly objects can also be acid or any potent chemical.
7. You are also liable to 21-year jail term if, as a suspected cultist, you arrange or order fellow cultist to avenge, retaliate or injure anyone within a premises in the state.
8. If you are a student, you can only join associations registered with the student affairs department of your educational institution.

9. As a student, if you join any such unlawful groups, you are liable on conviction to a term not exceeding two years imprisonment.
Apart from this, the Governing council of your institution can suspend or expel the student depending on the outcome of an investigation on the issue.
10. If you protect a cultist, you have committed an offence that can land you 15yrs imprisonment!

IF YOU DONT KNOW, NOW YOU KNOW.
