1/ Instilling trust in the COVID-19 vaccine 💉- how do we address myths and legitimate concerns? Let’s take a moment to address some of them 👇🏼
2/ Here are some common myths and concerns: 1) Vaccines are not safe because of the quick roll-out/emergency use authorization 2) Vaccines are not safe for pregnant or breastfeeding women 3) Vaccines and clotting risks
What other myths/concerns have you heard?
3/ Watch the following helpful video addressing many of these issues:
4/ These 3 vaccines obtained FDA emergency use auth., but it doesn’t mean they aren’t safe. They've gone through same strict lab testing & clinical trials as other vaccines (i.e. flu shot, tetanus, polio vaccine) & experts have ensured the COVID vaccines met same safety standards
5/ ACOG & AAP recommend that breastfeeding women get a COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccines do not affect your genes or DNA. There is no evidence that the COVID-19 vaccines cause infertility. ACOG also recommends vaccination for anyone who may consider getting pregnant in the future.
6/ What about COVID-19 and long-term side effects?
7/ Both the J&J vaccine and AstraZeneca have been on the news lately due to concerns about blood clots. While investigations are still underway, consider the following figures below:
8/ To put it in perspective, the risk of getting struck by lightning is much higher than the reported cases of blood clots from these vaccines. Not to mention, the risk of blood clots from COVID infection is significantly higher!
9/ So what can we do to encourage positive discussions on the COVID-19 vaccine with our patients? Consider the following AAP framework: Corroborate, About Me, Science, & Explain/Advise
1/ Let’s review pediatric sedation with Dr. Amy Alayari (PGY3)!
Classify the following level of sedation: someone is in a controlled state of depressed consciousness during which airway is maintained. Patient can respond to questions and light touch (e.g. “open your eyes”)
2/ Think of sedation as a continuum, understand that a patient can go from mild to general anesthesia within seconds! Review the slide here for the answer to the question above
3/ Always be prepared before giving sedation! That includes giving informed consent and making sure you have all materials in the SOAP-ME mnemonic ready
