Covaxin seems to be performing well too with just 695 positives after 1.7 mill second doses
(that comma caught me out after 17. - I thought for a moment it was 17 million, but on closer look it is 1,737,178)
Given social distancing has not been strongly maintained v. promising
No one would wish the dreadful tsunami of cases and deaths we are seeing in India to be visited on anyone.
However there is no doubt that the vaccines are being rolled out and tested “in anger” in very hard conditions indeed.
Second dosing really does confer an advantage.
The Indian Expert Groups gave permission for the AZ vaccine dosing interval to be extended from four to six week.
It has now (from April 4th) given permission for the second dose to be given up to eight week after the first dose.
There is reason to believe that longer interval will provide a stronger second dose boost.
It would be good to have more granular data on the breakthrough cases. How long after the second dose (it takes a bit of time for the boost to boost!).
Symptomatic? Death?
I would like to see a breakdown of breakthroughs by state as well.
Delhi / Maharashtra has been returning 25-30% positivity in recent days.
If the breakthrough rate there is very low that would be super encouraging.
The other problem, without context, is that India’s hospitalisation data not worth a great deal as too many people cannot get a hospital bed.
Also we KNOW that Cause of Death data re Covid is highly likely to be grossly underestimated.
So context would be welcome - & necessary

Mass cremations in New Delhi as India's capital faces deluge of COVID-19 deaths - ABC News
“Children who were five years old, 15 years old, 25 years old are being cremated. Newlyweds are being cremated. It's difficult to watch” abc.net.au/news/2021-04-2…
In the first wave the average number of people cremated each day in this crematorium were 8-10, with the maximum being 18.
On Tuesday it was 78, leading to makeshift pyres in the car park.
“The Government is not doing anything...you are on your own”.
Hanbury: Firm run by former Tory aides handed £700k Treasury contracts without tender.
The company was founded 4 years ago by Tory SpAds, Ameet Gill, Cameron aide who has known Sunak since before he was an MP, and Paul Stephenson, Vote Leave/Gove thetimes.co.uk/article/b14931…
Hanbury had a contract with AiQ around the time of the 2017 election. AiQ’s MD was later seen outside No10 and at Tory Party HQ.
I have often wondered if the act as a “cut out” company for the Tory Party
I’d take the suggestion that they maintain “robust” Chinese walls to prevent conflicts of interest with a large pillar of salt.
They were behind the Tory Party - UK Policy Group contract = offshoot of America Rising / Definers LINKED TO THE Sheryl Sandberg Soros smear.
6 hospitals in the Indian capital Delhi have completely run out of oxygen & doctors say other hospitals have just a few hours' worth of supply left.
A number of people have died while waiting for oxygen, & more than 99% of all ICU beds are full. bbc.co.uk/news/world-asi…
Worth remembering that Delhi was thought to be one of the best equipped for health facilities in India
There have been reports of state authorities stopping oxygen tankers from travelling to other states
Mass cremations are being carried out
Patients are trying to hit doctors!
In one Delhi crematorium they cremated 78 bodies yesterday. In the first wave they were cremating 8-10 people usually and even their worst day was 18 bodies.
It seem highly unlikely that they have reached the height of this wave.
USA: National healthcare databases of the US Dept of Veterans Affairs used to systematically & comprehensively identify 6-month incident sequalae including diagnoses, medication use, and laboratory abnormalities in 30-day survivors of COVID-19.
It shows that beyond the first 30 days of illness, people with COVID-19 exhibit higher risk of death and health resource utilization.
“The findings show that beyond the acute illness, substantial burden of health loss — spanning pulmonary and several extrapulmonary organ systems — is experienced by COVID-19 survivors”
An unvaccinated HC worker set off a Covid outbreak at a nursing home in Kentucky where the vast majority of residents had been vaccinated, leading to dozens of infections, including 22 cases among residents and employees who were already fully vaccinated nytimes.com/2021/04/21/hea…
The infections including 22 cases among residents and employees who were already fully vaccinated
Most did not experience symptoms. But one resident did die.
Two unvaccinated residents died
90% of 83 residents had been vaccinated but only half of the 116 employees
20 HCW were infected but just 4 of them were vaccinated
It seems that vaccine resistance has been steep amongst US nursing home staff.
In the U.K. as of 4/4/21, 78% of care homes workers had been vaccinated but in London and Lambeth homes the number was much lower. Under 60%
Whilst a high % that seems remarkably low compared to that Delhi - Hong Kong flight on 4th April - (but several tested positive during quarantine -49/188 seater plane ) and far FAR lower than the positivity rate in India and in Delhi.
