NEWS: A Capitol Police officer is under investigation for radioing all units on the morning of 1/6 and telling them to look for ONLY anti-Trump troublemakers, not pro-Trump.
A key lawmaker revealed the contours of the ongoing probe today.
As @froomkin points out, this is likely a Capitol Police official senior enough to send out this kind of a communication to officers in the field. It's a bit tricky to pin down on Lofgren's rough outline, but it hints at something very concerning
@froomkin There's a clear discrepancy here. And the extreme secrecy surrounding these probes is partly to blame. Hopefully this leads to more transparency about what really went on here.
@froomkin JUST IN: The Capitol Police is in full pushback mode against LOFGREN, describing her remarks as "inaccurate" and providing a verbatim of the radio transmission she referenced.
NEW: The Capitol Police are in pushback mode, suggesting a lawmaker's claim they were focused only on anti-Trump forces on the morning of 1/6 is inaccurate. Rather they were worried about pockets of street violence between pro/anti-Trump activists.
BUT: That's precisely the point Rep. LOFGREN was making -- that Capitol Police were still worried about antifa street fights on 1/6 when intelligence suggested a right-wing attack on Congress was brewing.
One new nugget here: The radion transmission is NOT being investigated. Rather, it was raised during the review of another officer facing scrutiny for 1/6 actions. That officer mentioned the transmission to investigators.
NEW: Looks like the exterior fencing around the Capitol is going to go back up ahead of potential unrest over the Chauvin trial verdict and Joe Biden's April 28 address to Congress.
@sarahnferris@nicholaswu12 We're told the $2 million fencing proposal was slated to come before the Capitol Police Board today. It won't be quite as extensive as previous fencing, but it comes amid lawmakers' anxiety about the security situation on the hill.
"I'm certainly not aware of the particular threat to the Capitol, nor do I think that every time there's some incident somewhere in the country that could possibly create a public response that we should fence off the US Capitol." politico.com/news/2021/04/2…
BREAKING: Federal judge orders Proud Boys leaders
Ethan NORDEAN and Joseph BIGGS *detained* pending trial, reversing earlier rulings.
"There’s a lot to unpack here in this case," says Judge Kelly as he begins to explain his decision.
KELLY: "The defendants stand charged with seeking to steal one of the crown jewels of our country, in a sense, by interfering with the peaceful transfer of power."
BREAKING: Jon Schaffer, a heavy metal guitarist and self-described lifetime member of the Oath Keepers, is about to plead guilty for participating in the Jan. 6 Capitol attack — and enter into a cooperaiton agreement.
Story TK
SCHAFFER was charged for dpeloying bear spray at officers in one of the earliest waves of Capitol rioters, but he's planning to plead guilty to two charges: Obstructing the certification of the 2020 election, and breaching a restricted building. courtlistener.com/recap/gov.usco…
SCHAFFER's hearing was not announced on the court's public calendar, which Judge Mehta acknowledged was due to the secrecy of the proceedings. though he noted the call-in line was open to the public. He's now speaking privately with the parties before finalizing the agreement.
NEW: The Capitol Police's riot unit is so dysfunctional that officers “actively find ways to circumvent getting assigned there," an internal watchdog found,
It's part of a scathing review of the department's readiness for the Jan. 6 insurrection.
UPDATE: Since our report that Trump booster Elliot Resnick was inside the Capitol on Jan. 6, several sharp-eyed readers have identified him in additional footage that adds context to his actions that day. politico.com/news/2021/04/0…
We now know that Resnick was in one of the first waves to breach the Capitol, entering the building around 2:26pm, before Pence was fully evacuated. Here he is (at 19:25) coming up the east front steps and appearing to wave on the crowd.
At 8:52 in this clip, Resnick lurches through the doors — while a cop tries in vain to stop the mob — with such force he falls forward. He then stands up and appears to head inside, but...
NEW: In late night filing, prosecutors appear to be increasingly confident that Oath Keepers stashed their firearms at the Comfort Inn in Ballston, VA. This would be the so-called quick-reaction force, or QRF, they referenced.
Oath Keeper point man Kelly Meggs also indicated the group sought out Speaker Pelosi.
And late on Jan. 6, dissension appeared to break out among Oath Keepers, including at leader Stewart Rhodes (person one)
