The Supreme Court of India has called this a "national emergency"
“This is beyond an emergency. It is a "complete collapse of the goddamn system", said one of India's leading virologists. In hotspots like Delhi and Mumbai, life, itself, is now a privilege” bbc.co.uk/news/world-asi…
India's healthcare system is buckling as a record surge in Covid-19 cases puts pressure on hospital beds and drains oxygen supplies, reporting 332,730 new cases of coronavirus on Friday, setting a world record for a second day running. Deaths were numbered at 2,263 in 24 hours.
“We do not have that many oxygen points
Whatever oxygen points are there, they're full
Patients are coming in with their own oxygen cylinders or without oxygen
We want to help them but there are not enough beds & not enough oxygen points even to supply them oxygen if it is there”
“People are seeking hospital beds, life-saving drugs, oxygen and plasma for their infected and sick friends and relatives. Often, after a period of silence, the same people announce the deaths of their "patients".
“My Twitter timeline is India's Covid-19 war-room, as the state appears to have largely withered away.”
“Over the past week, three buildings in the gated complex where I live have become "containment zones", with entire skyscrapers sealed because of too many infections. The days and nights are filled with helplessness, anxiety and fear. The bad news is unrelenting.”
It truly is an utter catastrophe.
An utter dereliction of Government.
I don’t know what we can do to help but, help we must.

‘It’s a betrayal’: Cornish fishing vote turns against Tories over Brexit deal | Local elections | The Guardian
But how will they vote? Are they still so in hoc to Brexit delusion they think voting for more of it will solve their problems? theguardian.com/politics/2021/…
Bosustow, 48, a Brexit supporter, will not be supporting the Tories on 6 May. “We are not going to forget when it comes to voting time,” he says. “I don’t feel like they [the Conservatives] deserve my vote at the moment.”
“Further down the quay, Brackan Pearce, 28, is restocking his trawler. He travelled up the Thames as part of a flotilla of fishing boats demanding control of British waters during the referendum campaign in 2016.”
Whilst working on Johnson’s Leadership campaign aide Malin Bogue was on payroll of steel tycoon Sanjeev Gupta | News | The Sunday Times thetimes.co.uk/article/boris-…
Candidates were required to disclose any gifts or benefits that they received. The MPs’ code of conduct states that they do not have to declare the services of volunteers unless they are “funded by another body”.
“Gupta argues that Bogue was free to volunteer as she was on 6/mnths’ gardening leave at the time of the campaign.”
The point is that is was PAID GARDENING LEAVE.
Imagine it was a drug dealer - it wouldn’t be hard to work out why this was a massive NO NO.
Michigan’s Covid Wards Are Filling Up With Younger Patients - The New York Times
They are admitting about twice as many patients in their 30s and 40s than they did during the Autumn peak. nytimes.com/2021/04/25/us/…
At Beaumont Hospital in one of America’s worst coronavirus hot spots, entire units are still filled with Covid patients. People weak with the virus still struggle to sit up in bed
The phone still rings with pleas to transfer patients on the verge of death to higher-tech units
But unlike previous surges, it now is younger & middle-aged adults — not their parents & grandparents — who are taking up many of Michigan’s hospital beds. A 37-yr-old woman on a ventilator after giving birth. A 41-yr-old father. A 55-yr-old autoworker who has been sick for weeks
It would be useful to understand the context of the breakthrough events (so we’re they at a time of high or low prevalence in their locality)
In India right now prevalence is SO high and vaccine roll out so slow that it would not be surprising if breakthrough events were higher
Given the paucity of access to good hospital care (huge demand from numbers, serious shortage of oxygen and drugs) it also would not be surprising if the breakthrough death rate is markedly higher too.
Remember my thread on the holes in our border controls?
THIS is one of them. Gov business
On returning to the UK, having contracted the virus without knowing it (maybe on the flight) with how many people did he interact in the following week, given he didn’t have to quarantine?
Looks as if Lister was in India either around the 15th or 22nd March (see next tweet with article dated Monday 22nd March referring to Lister being in India “last Monday”.
One would have thought they would be subject to the most rigorous testing on return
There is no worldwide joined-up effort to expand production
