The public segment of the #68OrdinarySession of the @achpr_cadhp came to an end after 11 days of intense virtual meeting bringing together States Parties, NHRIs & CSOs. The deliberation shows that situation of human & peoples’ rights on our continent is very saddening. 😢 😢 😢 ImageImageImage
68th ordinary session of @achpr_cadhp came to a close. Reviewed the reports of 2 States Parties #Niger & #Malawi, states that registered democratic transfer of power during past year, which is praiseworthy given the regression of democratic gov’ce in much of the continent.
Received updates on state of human rights highlighting some positive developments including ratification of human rights instruments, adoption of relevant legislation or review of existing ones, decisions of courts upholding rights, commutation of death penalty in🇹🇿🇳🇪🇿🇲
and expansion of coverage of access to electricity, health care, education etc in 🇹🇿, increased representation of women in elected offices in 🇦🇴,🇳🇪&🇹🇿
And updates highlighting concerning human rights issues including a) shrinking of the civic space involving attacks & arbitrary arrest or malicious prosecution on journalists, opposition members, human rights activists 🇺🇬🇿🇼🇸🇴🇧🇯🇹🇬🇲🇱🇪🇹🇰🇪🇪🇬🇲🇿🇩🇿🇹🇿🇨🇩
& excessive use of force against protestors including in 🇦🇴🇲🇱🇺🇬🇸🇳🇸🇴🇹🇩🇬🇳🇿🇦🇳🇪🇨🇬 b) extrajudicial killings or arbitrary executions in 🇲🇱🇲🇿🇰🇪🇧🇫
c) plight of vulnerable groups such as reported brutal attacks targeting persons with albinism in 🇲🇼🇲🇿 & 🇿🇲 and against members of the LGBTIQ community in 🇺🇬🇰🇪, the use of child labour in sectors such as fishing in🇬🇭
d) the pervasiveness of gender oppression including sexual violence🇪🇹🇳🇬, spike in teenage pregnancies in🇷🇼🇲🇼, lack of access to sexual and reproductive health leading to maternal mortality and unsafe abortion,
e) persistence of insecurity in countries affected by conflicts and expansion of insecurity with countries facing crises in 🇧🇫 🇨🇲 🇨🇩🇨🇫🇹🇩🇲🇱🇪🇹🇲🇿🇸🇸🇸🇩🇸🇴 with dire consequences for civilians including large scale displacements as witnessed in 🇲🇿 & 🇪🇹
f) deplorable state of lack of access to socio-economic rights by masses of the peoples of Africa further compounded by impacts of the COVID19 pandemic, corruption & poor service delivery & deepening of poverty & inequality due, among others, to commodification of social services
g)lack of access to COVID-19 vaccine in Africa with grave consequences to health & lives of the public, with essential service providers such as health care workers being forced to pay the price with their lives and to socio-economic wellbeing
