Thread on resurgence of coups @ecowas_cedeao extraordinary session today decided to suspend #BurkinaFaso following the coup on 25 Jan. This makes the fifth incident of military takeover of power in Africa in nine months time (between April 2021 and Jan 2022) /1 Such high number of coups in less than a year is exceptional, signifying clear trend of upsurge of coups, with risk of reversals of whatever progress made in reducing the frequency of occurrence of coups with AU/ECOWAS anti-coup norms /2

Yet another coup. This time in #Guinea. Once again it has a reignited the debate about coups in Africa. Indications are there is 📈 trend in the occurrence of coups. In 2019, there was one successful coup. In 2020, there were two. In 2021, three coups. 1/ This 📈 trend in the occurrence of coups corresponds with the deepening trend in the democratic governance deficit that has become characteristic of the politics of countries on the continent. 2/

The public segment of the #68OrdinarySession of the @achpr_cadhp came to an end after 11 days of intense virtual meeting bringing together States Parties, NHRIs & CSOs. The deliberation shows that situation of human & peoples’ rights on our continent is very saddening. 😢 😢 😢 ImageImageImage 68th ordinary session of @achpr_cadhp came to a close. Reviewed the reports of 2 States Parties #Niger & #Malawi, states that registered democratic transfer of power during past year, which is praiseworthy given the regression of democratic gov’ce in much of the continent.
