This week is Digital Switch Over in Lagos. Means Lagos is switching from Analogue to Digital Broadcasting. You’ll now need a Set-Top-Box (aka decoder) to access terrestrial TV.
UPSIDES: high-quality audio/video, more terrestrial channels, audience measurement for advertisers etc
It’s part of a worldwide shift from analogue TV broadcasting to digital. South Africa has just started, Zimbabwe too.
Nigeria started 2016, 6 States and FCT completed in phase 1, Lagos (April 29, 2021) marks the start of Phase 2.
Analogue signals occupy a lot more spectrum space than digital, so the #DSObyNBC will free up quite a bit of spectrum that can be used for other things. That’s more government revenues, and benefits for private sector and the Public.
This is what the new decoders for Digital terrestrial TV #DSObyNBC in Lagos will look like. With it you should have access to dozens of free-to-air channels delivering high quality sound and image.
April 29, 2021 is the switchover date.

3 random Automobile Industry #goodnews Stories from Nigeria. I’ve tried to do some regional balancing eh, because that’s what you people care for innit?
One from Ogun, one each from Enugu and Anambra, and one from Kaduna.
Let’s start with Kaduna. Peugeot Automobile Nigeria (PAN), one of the oldest vehicle assembly plants in the country. Has had ups and downs, AMCON took over 2012 or so, etc. About six months ago new investors took over, and have pledged to inject $150mn: google.com/amp/s/leadersh…
Sorry. 4 stories not 3. (I didn’t like Further Maths like that in secondary school)
The ghost-working kingpin has asked a question, albeit a ridiculously laughable one. I’ll answer, only because I want a deserving charity to benefit. I hope his shamelessness does not extend to owing charities.
Here’s positive articles from me about Nigeria, pre-2015:
Save the date. April 29, 2021 - Lagos State will be switching from Analogue TV broadcasting to Digital. Lagosians will, using an inexpensive set-top box & antenna, get access to potentially dozens of TV channels. Digital TV is higher quality video & audio, than analog. #DSObyNBC
Digital TV also frees up a lot of spectrum, which can be used for other things, like wireless broadband. The amount of spectrum needed to transmit one analog TV channel will transmit multiple digital channels. Digital TV allows so much more than Analogue.
With the digital switchover it will now finally be possible, I believe, to accurately measure viewing numbers and patterns/habits - among other benefits.
