2 The food situation is Cambodia becoming critical, especially among the poorest.
3 In the name of the Cambodian people of whom I have been an elected representative for 25 years, I call on the international community, notably the International Red Cross, to help the population of the country’s capital Phnom Penh.
4 In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, a confinement of the strictest kind, poorly conceived and executed was suddenly imposed on April 15 in three cities, Phnom Penh, Takhmao et Sihanoukville.
5 Most inhabitants have not been allowed to leave home since that date, with police resorting to violence to enforce the rules.
6 Food supply has suddenly fallen to zero for most of the inhabitants, especially the poor who are the great majority of the population and who, even in normal times, live from hand to mouth.
7 The food distribution systems which the authorities have put in place, such as mobile state grocery stores, are inadequate and inaccessible to the poor.
8 These people no longer have the means to buy food because they work in the informal sector and each day earn just enough to cover daily needs.
9/9 Under the current confinement and the absolute prohibition on leaving home, they are very quickly falling prey to under-nourishment and famine. #SamRainsy
