Very important. The prominent Left “allowed” in US and even in UK is loudly (too loudly) anti communist. It’s a source of continued amusement (and irritation) that GA Cohen is trotted out as a “Marxist philosopher” in anglo American circles.

Most of the so called analytical Marxists group deny core ideas like labour theory of value, alienation, freedom as self ownership, etc. They are socialists (of a sort) but certainly not Marxists in any meaningful sense.
The chichele chair in political theory at Oxford (held by Cohen & before him by Berlin) seemingly exists to coopt left thinking into conservative mainstream anglo American discourse by discrediting & invisibilizing genuinely radical views.
Add to this hall of infamy the sift socialist analysis of Erik Olin Wright, who ends up prescribing neoliberal style NGOs, local committee, etc. Very disappointing in terms of ideas for praxis. All this has hitherto passed for radical in the US.
*soft. And none of these well known (and well promoted) academics talk of things like the vanguard, Gramscean common sense, etc. Ideas which can actually take us to praxis. They are happy being 21st century monastery monks, ie. the glorified “ivory tower” academic.
