🧵here’s thing. on anything tangentially iran related, the opponents to this US admin are going to try make it politically toxic, 24/7, until the end of eternity. this admin has nothing to do with this zarif tape leak. still, it seems it would behoove it, to push back fast &hard
which, admittedly, since it has no forewarning what this thing is, would require basically having people doing it all the time. anyhow, result of not having that is, the story tonight is essentially kerry denies beating his wife. which is irritating and unfair. and stupid.
and i think the NYT among others had a probably inadvertent role on US side in making that the de facto headline and they should examine why that is.
almost as shameful and problematic as the NYT coverage of the Russian hacked/Wikileaks leaks of the Hillary Clinton emails nytimes.com/2021/04/26/us/…
the nyt should be ashamed of its coverage of this. and turning it into a kerry denies beating his wife.
they are dealing with another leak situation. they don’t know the motives of the leakers. and they are acting like it is just a click festorama whatever impact on the US politics and policy side. nytimes.com/2021/04/26/us/… did they learn anything?

State's Ned Price says doesn't comment on purported leaked material, doesn't have anything to say about authenticity, accuracy of or motives for leaking of Zarif tapes. But on excerpts that purport to suggest Russia tried to undermine deal, he suggests history does not bear out
You mentioned the talks in the previous iteration,
Iran and Russia. For both of those, the proof point we point to, that gives some degree of confidence, is the JCPOA itself. Whatever the geopolitical dynamic that culminated with july 2015 agreement, we were able to negotiate
successfully with Iran in the past in the context of P5+1. That is precisely the context we are in now
Focus today – in the talks in Vienna -- whether we can do so again.

thread: Senior US admin officials on WH call: As Americans we have felt the devastating impact of rising covid cases in India among our family & friends. US and India have had highest number of covid cases in the world. Remember India’s generosity to US in early days of pandemic
This weekend several US high level calls with Indian officials about best ways we can support India’s fight against covid, including Biden call with Indian PM Modi today, about range of support prepared to deploy immediately.
(caution, if understood this part) Because of scope of situation in India, Most effective and rapid step we could take at scale...was to divert our orders for the raw materials for Astra Zeneca vaccine to the Serum Institute in India. Not just give our extra AZ doses to India.

For Daniel Pipes & “the Middle East Forum, ...bankrolled by..right-wing donors — incl. Nina Rosenwald,... & the Gatestone Institute, which has financial ties to ... Rebekah & Robert Mercer — Tommy Robinson became an anti-Islam cause célèbre.” Now he’s turning to Russia for $$.
Pipes acknowledged to NYT that Robert Shillman, a billionaire Trump supporter & chief exec of Cognex Corp, was a Middle East Forum donor. Another NYT source said Shillman was also a major funder of June 9, 2018 rally where Robinson supporters attacked UK police near Parliament Image
in something of a prelude to the attack by right wing Trump supporters against the Capitol on Jan. 6, in which over 400 people have now been arrested on federal charges.

State spox Price on apparent Russian announcement local staff will no longer be allowed to work at US embassy Moscow: Not received formal notification, heard announcement, consider it quite unfortunate. local staff important to bilateral mission. Even as have profound disagreemts
on Russian DM Shoigu announcement mil exercise over, troops should go back to bases: We have heard the announcement. To the best of our knowledge, it remains an announcement...will be looking for follow through
repeatedly declines to say if US had any advance awareness that announcement was coming. Guess take from way he treated the question that if they had the awareness, it was not because the Russians told them such an announcement was coming.

US officials have quite consistently now several times used the language about some of the Iran sanctions imposed by Trump admin with deliberate and avowed purpose of hindering next admin diplomacy. wondering, is there possibly a legal related reason for doing so?
Do you know if ‘poison pill’ sanctions are more vulnerable to some sort of legal challenge or being overturned in some other sort of legal or policy review? @brianoftoole Am struck by US officials describing Trump admin sanx wall effort in what sounds like almost a lawyered way
🧵Update: turns out, there is. @brianoftoole says when you are delisting entitities, can do a couple ways. one is say they are no longer engaged in behavior which put them on the list. other way is a policy delisting. but in latter, supposed to treat similarly situated entitites

thread: Snr State Dept official, in background call on Vienna Iran talks: Made some progress, but not in a situation greatly different from after 1st round. Has been more clarification--But clarification does not necessarily mean consensus.
We have better idea of what US would need to do to come into full compliance. Iran has better idea of what it needs to do.
But there are still disagreements, and some important ones.
Distance that remains to be traveled is greater than distance traveled so far. We are not near the conclusion. We made some progress. Talks businesslike, productive, still many differences that would need to be overcome
