"Fuck school, fuck softball, fuck cheer, fuck everything," said a then 14yo cheerleader on Snapchat after she didn't make Varsity.

The Supreme Court hears arguments this week in the case of the school vs the sweary cheerleader h/t @rerutled

I'm a massive fan of profanity. I am intentionally sweary. And I write often about who can swear and when.

Patriarchy insists it controls everything, including our mouths. When our mouths threaten that control, patriarchy insists we shut them. feministgiant.com/p/essay-why-i-…
The obsession with civility in the United States is bipartisan and white, and often directed at women, especially Black women and women of colour.

The less power a woman has, the less freedom she is given to curse.
In this case, it is a white girl and a cheerleader and her swearing collides with patriarchy's expectations of niceness and politeness of both white girls and cheerleaders.

I add to her "Fucks" a big fuck you to conservatives who have embraced this as a free speech case.
They don't give a flying fuck about girls or patriarchy.

They do give a flying fuck about "free speech" for other reasons, among them their freedom to protect their "free speech" to say racist shit.

So lost in this case, most likely, will be discussions of patriarchy.
What does patriarchy expect and allow of girls?

What does patriarchy expect and allow of white girls vs Black and girls of colour?

Which girls are punished for violating those expectations and which girls earn or are deemed "deserving" of support? feministgiant.com/p/letter-dear-…
It is not a level-playing field. Black girls know that.

Starting at the age of 5, Black girls are perceived to be more adult-like and less innocent than white girls in school and other environments: “adultification bias." vox.com/identities/201…
When are girls allowed to be angry? Which girls are allowed to be angry? Which girls are punished for not being nice?

Are these issues for the boys on the football team?

I have a lot of thoughts. Until my Letter to the Sweary 9th Grader read this feministgiant.com/p/letter-dear-…
Patriarchy reserves for itself the power to offend, the power to be obscene.

And yet it wastes no time in policing women’s and girl's mouths as vehemently as it does the genitals of anyone who is not a cisgender heterosexual man. feministgiant.com/p/essay-why-i-…

The cheerleader swore on Snapchat, not at school. As I mention 👇🏽 former NYT opinion editor told me when I was NYT contributing opinion writer that I had to stop saying "fuck" on Twitter even though I wasn't a Times employee. So I started #WhyISayFuck feministgiant.com/p/essay-why-i-…

Feminism is not me and my friends making it through patriarchy’s obstacle course to live in post-feminist heaven. Feminism is the destruction of obstacles that hold back all those other women who are mired in the patriarchal fuckery of the here and now. feministgiant.com/p/essay-my-amb…
Too often the story of ambition has been written by and for middle and upper class (white) women and then presented to the rest of us as pre-packaged ambition for our consumption.

Feminism is not a few women hurdling over the obstacles. It is the destruction of those obstacles.

What does ambition look like in these days of immense loss & grief, when a global pandemic has pushed so many women out of workforce & into lockdown w/abusive partners in a reminder that it was home all along & not a park or a parking lot where danger & death often ensnared them?
Our ambition should be to guarantee universal basic income.

Our ambition should be to guarantee housing for all.

Our ambition should be to ensure everyone has free education and healthcare.

🎥 @rerutled March 2020
Our ambition should be to destroy patriarchy, white supremacy, misogyny, capitalism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, ageism and fatphobia.

Our ambition should fan the flames of subversion not fuel submission to patriarchy and its oppressions.

What is ambition for a woman whose goal is not to become a CEO? What does ambition look like for a woman whose goal is not to become rich? What is ambition liberated from corporate success? What is ambition for a working class woman or a woman who is poor?
feministgiant.com/p/essay-my-amb…
It is my ambition to liberate ambition from accumulation, be it wealth or the crumbs of patriarchy’s approval. My ambition is much bigger than doing whatever a man can. Men are not my yardstick.
If men themselves are not free of the ravages of racism, capitalism and other forms of oppression, it is not enough to say I want to be equal to them.

My ambition is for much more. I want to be free. My ambition is to destroy the patriarchy. feministgiant.com/p/essay-my-amb…

Vaccine equity and universal access to vaccines are essential. It is immoral and selfish and unjust--and will prolong the pandemic--to oppose waiving patent production for #COVID19Vaccine production.
It’s horrendous that while so many are desperate for vaccines globally, there are antivaxxer fuckwits in US, UK - etc who co-opt “my body my choice” and co-opt the Holocaust to “justify” their fuckery. I made this in May 2020 🎥 @rerutled #FuckNormal

At least 6 people were fatally shot by officers across the US in the 24 hours after jurors reached a verdict in the murder case against Chauvin on Tuesday.

1 verdict, then 6 police killings across America in 24 hours bit.ly/3nhAlmE h/t @jilevin

"A 16-year-old girl in Columbus, Ohio.

An oft-arrested man in Escondido, California.

A 42-year-old man in eastern North Carolina.

An unidentified man in San Antonio.

Another man, killed in the same city within hours of the first.

A 31-year-old man in central Massachusetts."
My essay asks: who protects us from the police? feministgiant.com/p/essay-fuck-t…
