All aboard! Here's tonight's mix for The Social Gathering (@thesociallondon). Press play at 6 and follow this thread for a good old wallow in nostalgia. Off we go back to the heady days of 1991... mixcloud.com/soniccathedral…
@thesociallondon We open with the sound of the @worldoftwistuk and the extended remix of ‘Sons Of The Stage’, what an incredible band/song. Here they are performing the single version on Eggs N Baker:
@thesociallondon@worldoftwistuk The football commentary was from the @SunderlandAFC v Newcastle derby match on November 17, 1991. Peter Davenport put Sunderland one up, but the game ended as a 1-1 draw (we'll ignore that)...
What's everyone drinking? Mad Dog 20/20? Thunderbird? Snakebite?
Washing down my second vaccine with this!
Next up is Intastella with ‘Bendy (In The Disco)’, a remix by @martinmoscrop. First saw them supporting @thecharlatans at Exeter Uni in late 1990. Legendary formative gig experience that was!
@martinmoscrop@thecharlatans@thomyorke I admit having no recollection of Magik Roundabout or their song ‘Everlasting Day’ (apparently they were from New Zealand), but this remix by Youth is great!
@martinmoscrop@thecharlatans@thomyorke Anyone know any more about them? This feels like an AI composite of every indie dance record from 90-91 (in a good way)
@martinmoscrop@thecharlatans@thomyorke Continuing the Magic Roundabout theme is this classic by The Badman, which samples Alain Legrand’s theme to the cult classic kids‘ show...
...of course, from ‘Ride’ it could only be to @rideox4 and ‘Unfamiliar’, the lead track from their utterly perfect ‘Today Forever’ EP...
Here they are performing it on Top Of The Pops March 14, 1991, with a Rickenbacker kindly loaned by @paulwellerHQ...
It's Levitation with ‘Smile’ from their debut ‘Coppelia’ EP. I admit I was scared of this band as an 18-year-old. I thought they were a bit too muso; what I described as “widdly”...
I now admit I was completely and utterly wrong. This is stunning…
They could/should have been massive. When I did some work experience at Rough Trade in 94, they were looking after Terry Bickers... I'm sure he'd decided to change his name to Terry Tree... 🌳
Should be talked about in the same way as @suedeHQ and Verve (no The)...
@suedeHQ Here are Moose with ‘Je Reve (I Dream)’ which they recorded as part of their first Peel Session which was broadcast on June 9, 1991...
@suedeHQ It features Tim Gane and Laetitia Sadier from @stereolabgroop on guitar and vocals respectively and it's incredible, as is the whole session:
@suedeHQ@stereolabgroop Next up is Modern English and a remix of ‘Life’s Rich Tapestry’ from their ‘Pillow Lips’ LP of the previous year...
@suedeHQ@stereolabgroop Just to prove this stuff isn't thrown together, Mick Conroy from Modern English is now bandmates with KJ ‘Moose’ McKillop in @piroshkaband, who announced their new album yesterday!
More new wave survivors next in the form of @WireHQ who, like lots of people, dropped an E in 1991 (after drummer Robert Gotobed left) and became Wir...
@WireHQ This is a remix of ‘Take It’, from ‘The First Letter’, their one album as Wir, by LFO
@WireHQ I could only follow that with LFO themselves, with the remix of their ‘We Are Back’ single, a timeless @WarpRecords classic:
@WireHQ@WarpRecords The Grid (hi @MrRichardNorris 👋) were in-demand remixers back in 1991, especially for synth duos, it seems. Here they are reworking Dave Ball’s other band @softcellhq’s ‘Memorabilia’...
...and this is The Grid’s version of @petshopboys’ ‘DJ Culture’!
@petshopboys Speaking of @petshopboys – they both turned up on the genius debut album by Electronic on the incredible ‘The Patience Of A Saint’:
@petshopboys I definitely wouldn’t rather watch drying paint!
@petshopboys This is an all-time favourite album for me. I bought the tape in Manchester in the Summer of 91. When I stayed with my brother in Dundee, someone broke in and stole my Walkman but... discarded the tape!
Bought a cool @ScreamOfficial T-shirt at the same time, but it went in a red wash by mistake 😳
Next we have another Factory Records classic – Cath Carroll’s ‘Moves Like You’. This is the single remix, but the original was on this legendary tape (FAC305) that came free with Select magazine...
What a tune! Bit too jaunty this mix though!
Ah, the Field Mice... This it the opening track from their final album, ‘For Keeps’, with lovely vocals from Annemari Davis:
The link between these next three records is they were all engineered or produced by Ian Catt...
Here’s a refreshing glass of Cola Boy (@bobpetesarah in disguise), with the ‘I Pour The Cola Mix’ of ‘7 Ways To Love’... Here's the single version on TOTP:
@bobpetesarah Now it's the real @bobpetesarah with ‘London Belongs To Me‘. A better soundtrack to those bright and sunny London days (when you feel buzzy and alive) I'm yet to hear:
@bobpetesarah Felt like this when I met my mate Marc in the pub the other night... until the hypothermia kicked in 🥶
@bobpetesarah@heavenlyrecs Yep, it’s only @worldoftwistuk again with their cover of The Honeycombs’ sad / creepy / Covid-be-gone anthem ‘This Too Shall Pass Away’...
@bobpetesarah@heavenlyrecs@worldoftwistuk The original was produced, of course, by Joe Meek. So we end with a little sample from the great documentary about him that was broadcast on @BBCTwo on February 8, 1991:
@bobpetesarah@heavenlyrecs@worldoftwistuk@BBCTwo Right, that's enough of this “crap”. Set time machine controls back to the present day... see you on the other side. Thanks for having us @sociallondon! Making plans to do this IRL sooner rather than later!
Everybody ready for The Social Gathering (@thesociallondon) at 6pm? I know it's nice out, but it's even nicer back in 1991! Join us in the time machine...
@thesociallondon So we start with the voice of Martin Hannett talking to Tony Wilson about his production techniques. Martin died, aged just 42, on April 18, 1991…
So, it’s 1991. I have just turned 18, and the world is my oyster. Except I am stuck in the cultural desert of North Devon with just a few record shops and the music press to keep me sane...
Tonight, from 6pm, we’ll be hosting the drinks for @thesociallondon and taking a trip back in time...
1991 was The Year Shoegaze Broke and all year we’re updating a blog commemorating the 30th anniversary of the great things that happened that year: soniccathedral.co.uk/1991theyearsho…
But, it wasn’t just about shoegaze. In 1991 I had just turned 18, and the world was my oyster. Except I was stuck in the cultural desert of North Devon with just a few record shops and the music press to keep me sane… Now, 30 years later, I’m stuck in Northwest London...
