I have never seen an ad like this before. First time I’ve heard “vagina” and “menopause” in an ad. Note: It is targeted at cis women and is not inclusive of all menopausal people. h/t @hotflashinc
For an intersectional, trans, nonbinary and gender non conforming inclusive book on perimenopause and menopause PRE-ORDER @heathercorinna brilliant book - and I'm not saying that just because I'm in it!
Also: are you ready for our chat about Heather’s book for one of my favourite bookshops @wcfbook?! Sign up! I’m so excited to be talking to them about everything perimenopause & menopause.
This is some background about the ad campaign which is called Long May She Reign. shots.net/news/view/long…
After years of seeing ads targeted at cis het men and erectile dysfunction, this is probably the first time I've seen an ad targeted at cis het women and vaginal dryness and painful sex.
No thread on perimenopause would be complete without suggesting that you follow the great @Osunsweetnsour Black Girl’s Guide to Surviving Menopause on Instagram. And listen to her podcast!
You will remember this thread about an Arabic-language ad (also targeted at cis women) aimed at replacing the phrase in Arabic for menopause which translates to “Age of despair” with a more positive one. Also h/t @hotflashinc
Both ads deal with taboo & stigma associated with peri/menopause: vaginal dryness, painful sex, & incontinence.
The Long May She Reign ad says those words out loud. The Age of Despair ad does not say "incontinence" but it's made by a company that makes products that address it.
Why the ways bodies change with maturing is considered taboo and too shameful to portray or to say in an ad is worth pausing to consider.
Why is it only now in 2021 are ads like this seemingly possible?
Obviously, peri/menopause are not new.
But why so many of us feel so utterly unprepared for it and with so few resources to help is fucking outrageous.
By 2025, 1.1 billion people will be going through menopause--12% of the global population--more than ever before.
And too often, that demographic is considered only as a cash source. How much money can be made off of us.

Too often the story of ambition has been written by and for middle and upper class white women and then presented to the rest of us as pre-packaged ambition for our consumption.
It was never my ambition to become a CEO, to have a corner office, or to become rich. What is ambition liberated from all of that?
What does ambition look like for a woman whose goal is not to become rich? What is ambition liberated from corporate success? #MayDay2021
What is ambition for a working class woman or a woman who is poor?
Who or what determines what women are supposed to be, want, and do? Primarily, patriarchy, which works in tandem w/other forms of oppression, esp for women of colour and women from marginalized groups.

I am still enthralled and delighted by this display at the front of @Foyles in London. Look for it in your local bookshops or order online here feministgiant.com/p/the-seven-ne…
Feminism is not me and my friends making it through patriarchy’s obstacle course to live in post-feminist heaven. Feminism is the destruction of obstacles that hold back all those other women who are mired in the patriarchal fuckery of the here and now. feministgiant.com/p/essay-my-amb…

Feminism is not a few women hurdling over the obstacles. It is the destruction of those obstacles.

I'm a massive fan of profanity. I am intentionally sweary. And I write often about who can swear and when.
Patriarchy insists it controls everything, including our mouths. When our mouths threaten that control, patriarchy insists we shut them. feministgiant.com/p/essay-why-i-…
The obsession with civility in the United States is bipartisan and white, and often directed at women, especially Black women and women of colour.
The less power a woman has, the less freedom she is given to curse.
What does ambition look like in these days of immense loss & grief, when a global pandemic has pushed so many women out of workforce & into lockdown w/abusive partners in a reminder that it was home all along & not a park or a parking lot where danger & death often ensnared them?
