The weird racism of menthol cigarette bans, tear gas is bad for you, the Portland Police Bureau's budget is even worse, and a deep dive into Biden's jingoistic speech
I'm especially proud of the Joe Biden analysis, which goes pretty deep into things
The speech was not leftist so let's get that out of the way
A lot of his outlined policy changes would materially help people. Baby steps in the right direction are still steps
Biden also outlined his strategy for dealing with Republicans which can be summed up as "compromise with me today or we’ll ram it down your fucking throats tomorrow, you assholes, you obstructionist jerks"
It's a good way to sell noncompromise as reasonable to the general public
The big takeaway for me, though, was the new Us-vs-Them ideological battle to the death framework Biden has chosen to adopt
The American way of life as constituted post-WWII requires an existential threat, and we've been floundering ever since the Berlin Wall fell
Biden seeks to replace our current Us-vs-Them narrative (left vs right) with a more traditional external enemy: Democracy vs Autocracy
I don't think it'll work but he's trying
Anyway, check out the newsletter I talk about this for like 2000 words it's horrible

The Sergeant Major screamed at us as we sat there, hungry, for about 30 minutes. It seems we'd filled the forms out wrong. Many of us were clearly lying to make the unit look bad
Then he gave us the survey to fill out again
Seems there was no sexual harassment problem after all
And that's how the 508th STB, 4BCT, 82nd Airborne Division solved their sexual harassment problem overnight
This is a take that's going to upset people but it's a conversation we need to have so here goes:
Not-Black people should always, ALWAYS be quiet and listen to Black voices when it comes to the experience of being Black, lived oppression, the kinds of solutions that can move us forward into a more equitable world, what Black communities need to thrive, etc.
The fact that only Black people know what it is to be Black in America, and that we should listen without speaking on that subject, does NOT mean Black people are omniscient in every area of activism or life and should never be questioned
