Boris Johnson was one of the highest paid journalists in Fleet Street. His salary at The Telegraph in 2018 was a reportedly £275,000 a year on top of his other salaries and earnings. In 2019 he was earning over £800,000 a year.
More than anything why does Boris Johnson think other people should pay for his childcare and profligate lifestyle?
Still I'm sure the general public will empathise. I mean who hasn't struggled to get by on their 6 figure salary and sought help with the childcare from a very rich Tory donor
Johnson inhabits that curious other world of the English upper classes where nannies are considered essential. Like Jacob Rees Mogg he was essentially brought up by one. tatler.com/article/boris-…

I was a child but I have a very clear memory of a John Wayne film being cut short as they went live to the Iranian Embassy and thanks to this tweet I know now that it was Chisum (1970)

That even the dreadful martyrdom must run its course...
When Dominic Cummings first went to Oxford, he tried to impress his peers by rescuing a squirrel that was trapped in a bin on a day trip at Alton Towers. The attempt failed and the squirrel subsequently attacked him as he ran away pursued by it. These things can haunt a man.
In many respects, it set the pattern for his life.
That curious assumption - repeated here by Max Hastings in the S. Times - that the only alternative to monarchy, would be a President Blair, Branson, Johnson or Piers Morgan.... like they're the only options.
If you talk about the idea of a republic... that's the standard response. It's the monarchy equivalent of "project fear" - a means of shutting down debate. All sorts of alternatives available and it doesn't have to be a household name or former breakfast tv presenter
Also - there'd be nothing to stop a member of the Royal Family standing or even being among the options available would there.
Only 4 of these people have children at school. Several don't have children at all. None of them have ever taught. And it's not going to be mandatory to wear a mask in schools anyway.
Still I suppose we all need to fill the empty days.

This is - I'm afraid - going to take more than one tweet. I'm very grateful to @welbeckpublish for taking a punt on me and to my agent Doug Young. Thanks to, to The Bookseller for this - which sums up the direction of travel thebookseller.com/news/otto-engl…
Finally - and I'm sorry to come over all Oscars acceptance speech before the thing has even come out - thank you twitter friends for the arguments and friendships and banter. This site gets a bad rap. It's not all bad!
