Master the morning fundamentals

to improve your Stoic self-discipline

Thread ๐Ÿ‘‡
1. Getting Up

Hitting a 10 minute alarm snooze

adds nothing to your day.

You can achieve two things

before the day even gets going:

1. Get up early
2. Make your bed

๐Ÿ‘‡
"At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself:

'I have to go to work โ€” as a human being.'

What do I have to complain of, if Iโ€™m going to do what I was born for โ€”

the things I was brought into the world to do?"

- Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 5.1

๐Ÿ‘‡
2. Getting Washed

Try a cold shower every now and then

(or every day if you like)

to reduce your dependence on comfort

and remind yourself how resilient you really are.

๐Ÿ‘‡
"I remembered my profession as a veteran devotee of cold water,

and, clad as I was in my cloak,

let myself down into the sea, just as a cold-water bather should."

- Seneca, Epistles 53.3

๐Ÿ‘‡
"I, the former cold-water enthusiast, who used to celebrate the new year by taking a plunge into the canal,

who, just as naturally as I would set out to do some reading or writing...

used to inaugurate the first of the year with a plunge."

- Seneca, Epistles 83.5

๐Ÿ‘‡
3. Getting Dressed

Simplifying your clothing reduces

time spent each day deciding what to wear.

Limiting your choices,

using and wearing only what's necessary,

is a source of strength.

๐Ÿ‘‡
"Dress merely to keep out the cold...

merely as a protection against personal discomfort...

Despise everything that useless toil creates as an ornament and an object of beauty.

And reflect that nothing except the soul is worthy of wonder."

- Seneca, Epistles, 8.5

How do you respond when people wrong you? ๐Ÿ˜ก

10 guidelines directly from Marcus Aurelius.

[Meditations 11]

Thread ๐Ÿ‘‡
First.

Concerning those that offend,

consider in the first place,

the relation you stand in towards men,

and that we are all made for each other.
Second.

Consider what sort of people they are at table, in bed, and so on.

Most of all, what sort of behaviour their opinions impose on them,

and their complacent pride in acting as they do.

7 simple Stoic actions that help me get out of a low mood

๐Ÿ™‚

๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡
1. Check in with right now

I might be feeling worried or down right now,

but thatโ€™s the result of judgements Iโ€™m making in my head.

Outside my head, those judgements donโ€™t exist.

I can appreciate Iโ€™m here and that if my basic needs are met then everything else is a bonus.
"Be happy for this moment,

this moment is your life."

- Marcus Aurelius

The guiding virtues of a Stoic:

โœ… Wisdom
โœ… Courage
โœ… Justice
โœ… Temperance

And what they mean ๐Ÿ‘‡
Wisdom is:

โœ… Good sense
โœ… Good calculation
โœ… Quick-wittedness
โœ… Discretion
โœ… Resourcefulness

The knowledge of what is good and bad.
Courage is:

โœ… Endurance
โœ… Confidence
โœ… Cheerfulness
โœ… Industriousness

The state of the soul that is unmoved by fear.

Sometimes you grow weary because familiar sets of circumstances that shouldnโ€™t cause disturbance cause disturbance.

Disturbance enough that simple tasks are a burden.

You think: "Oh, this again โ€“ why do you do this to yourself?"

๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡
Stop.

Fight the emotional impulse.

๐Ÿก“
You arenโ€™t going to yield to it this time, youโ€™re going to remember that it will pass just like last time.

More promptly because youโ€™re getting better at noticing it.

This feeling is as ephemeral as stormy weather. Itโ€™ll clear.

Every storm ceases to exist soon.

10 quick lessons Stoicism has taught me

(From reading ancient and modern texts, practicing principles and engaging with others)

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿ”ฅ
1. Life is a mere moment

Donโ€™t waste time on things outside your control
2. Itโ€™s always the right decision to do the right thing.

(And to say the true thing).
