10 quick lessons Stoicism has taught me

(From reading ancient and modern texts, practicing principles and engaging with others)

๐Ÿ”ฅ๐Ÿ›๐Ÿ”ฅ
1. Life is a mere moment

Donโ€™t waste time on things outside your control
2. Itโ€™s always the right decision to do the right thing.

(And to say the true thing).
3. The reward for a good deed is the doing of the deed itself.

Thereโ€™s no need to seek recognition.
4. Always choosing comfort when thereโ€™s an option to practice discomfort guarantees future discomfort hits harder when thereโ€™s no choice to make.
5. Having strong preferences instead of inflexible desires makes a huge difference to peace of mind.
6. Every person you meet is an opportunity.

Not for personal gain or to further your business network.

But simply to be kind to someone.
7. Taking pleasure in the small things in life means thereโ€™s a lot to take pleasure in.
8. Be tolerant with others and strict* with yourself.

* Strict but never abusive.
9. While itโ€™s not always possible, having no opinion about a matter is fine.

(And it may save you a lot of grief.)
10. See improvement as an ongoing process, not an outcome.

Enjoy processes, donโ€™t get attached to outcomes.

Sometimes you grow weary because familiar sets of circumstances that shouldnโ€™t cause disturbance cause disturbance.

Disturbance enough that simple tasks are a burden.

You think: "Oh, this again โ€“ why do you do this to yourself?"

๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿ‘‡
Stop.

Fight the emotional impulse.

๐Ÿก“
You arenโ€™t going to yield to it this time, youโ€™re going to remember that it will pass just like last time.

More promptly because youโ€™re getting better at noticing it.

This feeling is as ephemeral as stormy weather. Itโ€™ll clear.

Every storm ceases to exist soon.

Cleanthes & Deschamps: The Water Carriers

Before a game between @ManUtd & @juventusfcen in 1996, Utdโ€™s Eric Cantona sparked a row with Juveโ€™s Didier Deschamps.

โ€œHe gets by because he gives 100% but he will never be more than a water carrier,โ€ said Cantona.
โ€œThe water carrierโ€ was also the nickname given to Cleanthes (born 330 BC), who literally had the job of transporting water in Athens.

Cleanthes was noted for continuing his manual labours even after becoming a well-known Stoic philosopher.
Cantonaโ€™s implication was that Deschamps lacked ability and was only capable of doing โ€œdirty work.โ€

Deschamps response was simple:

โ€œA water carrier? Yes, thatโ€™s exactly what I am. Great teams are not just created by the architect but also by bricklayers and hod carriers.โ€

When was the last time you helped someone without them knowing it was you?

Like a dog after a hunt, said Marcus Aurelius, we shouldnโ€™t make a fuss when we help someone. We should just go on to the next thing.

Hereโ€™s why (with examples) you should do anonymous acts of kindness๐Ÿ‘‡
Research suggests that altruism can improve your attitude and make you healthier, happier, and less stressed โ€“ otherwise known as the โ€œhelperโ€™s high.โ€

Doing an act of kindness is gratifying, but thereโ€™s an added layer of satisfaction that comes with doing it anonymously.
In his song Nickels and Dimes, Jay-Z said the โ€œpurest form of giving is anonymous to anonymous.โ€

โ€œThe person on the receiving end doesnโ€™t have to feel some kind of obligation to the giver,โ€ he later explained. โ€œAnd the person giving isnโ€™t doing it with an ulterior motive.โ€

A random thread on NOTES โœ๏ธ

Hupomnema (Greek. แฝ‘ฯ€ฯŒฮผฮฝฮทฮผฮฑ, plural แฝ‘ฯ€ฮฟฮผฮฝฮฎฮผฮฑฯ„ฮฑ, hupomnemata) is a Greek word meaning note.

Michel Foucault used it when talking about Seneca's discipline of self-knowledge.๐Ÿ‘‡
Foucault said: "There was a culture of personal writing: taking notes on the reading, conversations, and reflections that one hears or engages in; keeping notebooks ('hupomnemata') on important subjects, which must be reread from time to time so as to reactualize their contents."
It's safe to assume Seneca used his notebooks as raw material for the works attributed to him, which include a dozen philosophical essays, one hundred and twenty-four letters dealing with moral issues, nine tragedies, and a satire. Image
