The article even quoted Dr. Fauci, and claimed his quote was an acknowledgement that herd immunity isn’t possible. But if you read his quote, that’s not even what he’s saying.
The article’s main argument that herd immunity is now impossible: vaccination rates have slowed. Well OF COURSE they’ve slowed. We’re past the eager beavers racing for early doses, and now into the people who are getting vaccinated but aren’t in a hurry. This was inevitable.
To give you an idea of how this kind of bullshit article construction works: the New York Times could have just as easily only quoted the experts who think herd immunity is possible, and claimed THEY were the consensus. Either way the article would be bullshit.
The problem is that because it’s the New York Times, most people just assume the article is true, and then they start trying to rationalize in their heads why it must be true. Suddenly the “herd immunity is impossible” narrative has swept the nation.
Then we all just give up instead of continuing to steer our mildly hesitant friends and family toward vaccination, and so the odds of reaching herd immunity drop greatly.

To be clear, there is ALWAYS a percentage of vaccinated population where herd immunity kicks in for a virus. Experts just don’t agree on what that percentage might be for COVID. So they’re split on when or whether we’ll reach it.
