I just got home from Elizabeth City where #AndrewBrownJr was killed. I spent last night walking through the Downtown and talking with local residents. There was one thing I kept hearing.
People in the town - including protesters and folks on the sidelines - kept pointing out that the city didn't "burn" even though there were nightly protests. They wanted this mentioned.
A few of the people I talked with attributed this to how tight knit this community is. People are angry - and not everyone in the town agrees - but they didn't want to damage their town.
As evidence of how close the community is, Ernest Banks, the local shoe repair man, told me his parents had a rule when he grew up. If he was dating a girl from the other side of the bridge, he needed to know her family six generations back to make sure they werent related
Ernest and a local radio host, "Big Mike" Robinson told me that whenever someone from Elizabeth City goes overseas, they tell people theyre from Elizabeth City. They don't name the country or the state.
You can read a bit about Ernest and his homemade #AndrewBrownJr memorial in this story theuprising.info/p/an-exclusive…
Both Ernest and Big Mike were in at least their 60s and vets. They have both been out actively protesting after Andrew Brown Jr.'s death. I found that very striking.
This town has a special place in my heart. I want to go back under better circumstances.
Before I left today I had the best catfisb I have ever tasted at Pier 17. A white woman there was telling me she'd lost her best friend to drugs this past year. They died in a motel. She said issues with hard drugs are bad there.
It matters so much to me to report on places and issues that don't get enough attention. That's what I am hoping to do with @theuprising. If you value this kind of reporting, please consider signing up! theuprising.info

In his next tweet, David, a top Bush White House official, says, "I supported the wars too of course."
There is this game folks are playing now where they pretend everyone was totally stunned that there were no WMDs and that no one had any idea Afghanistan might be a bad idea. I was a teenager at the time. Kids knew. Many people warned it would go exactly this way.
What I am saying is, just take the L @davidfrum. A lot of people died.

I am beginning to suspect that @MrAndyNgo isn't entirely on the level.
Far right media figures are really latching onto this narrative that gun violence is only covered when shooters are white. This is a great example of how they are willing to lie while making this obviously untrue and racially charged claim.
@ParkerMolloy pointed this specific tweet out before me

This is the same lawyer who defended one of the officers involved in the Abner Louima case, one of the most awful incidents of police brutality in Giuliani era NYC
Here's a story about that defense. nytimes.com/2002/07/08/nyr…
A few years later, I went to high school in that precinct. The officers were rough. Once they threw a Black friend through a window. A crowd gathered as they arrested him and slammed him on the ground. They arrested bystanders who shouted, covered badges, and joked about Louima.

The dead US Capitol Police officer's body was just driven in a motorcade down Constitution Avenue. Secret Service saluted ad thr body passed.
Here's more of the procession for the fallen Capitol Police officer. The Secret Service were emotional in a way I have never seen before. Incredibly sad.
Video footage of the processional and salute for the fallen Capitol Police officer on Constitution Ave by the White House.

.@KJP46 has become the first Black woman to hold a White House press briefing in about 30 years.

Here's a picture of her gaggle on Air Force One yesterday.

I took it because I had the sense I was witnessing history.
I recently wrote a story about @JudySmith_, a trailblazer who became the first Black woman to conduct a briefing in 1991. google.com/amp/s/news.yah…
Karine's first gaggle on the plane actually came when Biden went to Atlanta on 3/19. I believe the great @dougmillsnyt may have a photo. But yesterday was her first gaggle that was fully streamed on the White House site since it was the big infrastructure bill rollout.

Some news this morning! I am writing about with my good friend @nycsouthpaw about the rise of the New American Left and its future. We are both incredibly excited to get started and hope it's something you'll all want to read.

politico.com/newsletters/pl…
This is a time of seismic shifts in our politics. While the turmoil on the right has been exhaustively chronicled there are also transformational forces shaping the left and their story has yet to be fully told. We can't wait to share it with you.
I am incredibly grateful to our rockstar agent @ameliaatlas, our publisher @wwnorton, and the many people who have shared their stories with us. I also could not have done this without the support of my family and my partner in crime @nycsouthpaw.
