The United States of America will support a proposal to waive intellectual-property protections for Covid-19 vaccines. #TRIPSwaiver Image
South Africa and India, first proposed the #TRIPSwaiver in October 2020, urging WTO members to temporarily suspend rules on intellectual property rights, as this would be the most efficient and equitable way to address vaccine shortages in poor countries.
Developing countries have been deeply affected by the #COVID19 pandemic, disproportionately, deepening the devastating social and economic crisis in those regions, and thereby diminishing gains made over the years.
The Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) waiver proposal by SA & India is officially backed by 58 sponsoring governments, & about 100 countries are supporting it. The U.S supports this waiver, for Covid-19 vaccines in the interest of ending the pandemic.
