I've been working #remote for ~5 years now. Mainly as a software developer.
A lot of people now find themselves permanent/hybrid working from home, here are some tips :
0/ š§µ
1/ Have a physical space/room to work as your office.
Working in the living room/bedroom is not optimal as there is no disconnect from the office and the living room, you don't want to blurry these lines.
If this is not an option, try to isolate that area as much as you can.
2/ Invest in good hardware and ergonimics.
Sound obvious but a good chair and desk with ergonimics in mind go A LONG WAY
I've had a couple of friends working with some kitchen/dining chairs, these aren't made to sit for 6h. Set the monitor at eye level, keep an š on posture.
3/ Routine, routine routine.
To me, not having a clear clock-in and clock-out time made things a bit fuzzy, I was always "working" but productivity went down.
I also try to keep housekeeping tasks on their own schedule or else everything gets mixed up.
4/ Don't neglect friends and family
At first, you'll think you'll have a better work-life balance
But depending on your personality, WFH might give you an excuse to not leave your house. Once the #COVID situation is over, make time to socialize. For now, do it virtually, be safe
5.1/ Mental & Physical wellness
I'll keep it short and simple:
- Care for your mental health, take breaks, socialize, relax
- What your diet, you now have time to eat home-cooked meals, avoid ordering fast food
- Go to the gym/exercise 3~5x a week
You'll feel more energized.
5.2/
I don't meditate but it works for some people, but I still make sure to go out every day for a walk, even if the weather is not optimal (@joreilly has also talked about this).
Be aware of the every looming burnout
6/ Practice makes perfect
If you are struggling, give yourself a break. It's normal to feel less productive, as with any routine change, it takes time to adapt.
You'll get better and things will eventually feel better/natural.
