I've thought a lot about regret, and I still wonder about it. There's no use in beating ourselves up over a mistake or failure, but it's normal to hurt after we've caused hurt, and nuclear waste, the irradiation left by nuclear warheads continues to hurt every living thing.
If Oppenheimer was a sociopath, he wouldn't have cared about the hurt he had caused.
Trauma is the only feeling a sociopath experiences, and since its their only stimulus in life, they identify trauma with pleasure. They continually transgress. Like an addict, they seek out greater and greater traumas in the search for harder, long-lasting highs.
I don't fault a journalist or editor who has felt pressured to abandon their duty to the reader, and feels remorse. I fault economics professors like @ProfEmilyOster, sell-outs like @BenjaminLinas and gas-lighting, mediocre writers like @mattbai for not caring.
Distinctions should probably be made between sociopaths and cowards, but the two are a natural match and can usually be found together in large groups.
