The GOP got away with it for 15 years bc anyone who says they suspect cheating is called tin foil since they can’t prove it. Check mate. That said, a federal court held in 2018 that GA’s paperless voting machines were unconstitutional. It’s why GA had to move to paper. 1/
It didn’t help that some Democrats have gone along with the paperless voting machine scam. Georgia had a Democratic SOS when it became the first state to deploy touchscreen machines statewide. That year, the state lurched to the right. 2/
Some Ds in Congress voted against paper, including Steny Hoyer & Chris Dodd. The Rs who pushed paperless machines were Mitch McConnell and Bob Ney. 3/
The asserted rzn for paperless machines was that that paper ballots are unfair to voters w/ visual impairments bc they can’t use them. Except paper advocates agreed there shld be an exception for voters w/ visual impairments & other disabilities who can’t use paper ballots. 4/
So in my opinion the rationale was nonsense. 5/
This includes a 2004 letter signed by Mitch McConnell (R), Bob Ney (R) Steny Hoyer (D) & Chris Dodd (D) explaining their opposition to paper ballots. 6/ larouchepub.com/other/2004/311…
The Help America Vote Act of 2002 provided $3 billion in funding for new voting machines w/ no paper trail requirement. The only senators who opposed it were Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer. IMO, the Ds who voted for it were scammed. 7/ prospect.org/features/2000-…
After the GOP won several devastating and unexpected victories in Georgia in 2002 (in an election conducted w/ paperless machines), many Ds realized they had effed up & should have listened to Hillary. They tried to pass a law to amend HAVA to require paper, but Rs killed it. 8/
About 70% of the US has moved to hand marked paper ballots. But in most places no one ever looks at it bc automatic hand recounts typically occur only if the margin is less than .5% & only a few states require automatic meaningful manual audits (regardless of the margin). 9/
Before the 2020 election, Ds tried to pass a bill requiring automatic robust manual audits for all federal races, but Rs blocked it. I wrote about that here. If no one ever looks at paper meaningfully or at all, machines might as well be paperless. 10/ nybooks.com/daily/2020/10/…
Maybe the mere presence of paper has some deterrent effect against fraud. There’s no way to measure that though. 11/
Rs got away with precluding automatic robust manual audits for all federal races bc anyone who says they don’t trust an unaudited electronic outcome is called “tin foil”since they can’t prove that the unaudited result is wrong. Even Ds will disparage them. See the pattern? 12/
Welcome to hell. 13/
Oh, and then Trump took advantage of this crap election system that Republicans mostly created. It is projection and reverse reality and a total nightmare. Because Ds have not made enough noise, Trump stole & distorted the narrative. 14/
So now Ds are running around pretending vote tallies are secure bc they don’t want to give TFG and his allies more ammunition for their hijacked narrative. FFS. 15/
Presumably for the same rzn, Ds seem to have dropped any effort to require robust manual audits for all federal races in 2022 (as opposed to only the races & places & vendor that Rs choose to #fraudit). If the system is already so great, who needs meaningful manual audits? 16/

"Use it or lose it" voter purges in GA & OH assume u must have moved or died if u miss a few elections & don't return a postcard. Why don't they just check the USPS notice of change of address list and ERIC? Because voter suppression... By the ABA americanbar.org/groups/crsj/pu…
"There is every reason to be concerned that this practice continues because it has a political skewing effect. Failure to vote regularly correlates with lower socioeconomic status and, at least in some places, with being a member of a racial minority."

I feel it is very misleading for anyone to discuss the GOP's current "audits" without mentioning every single time that,

(a) Beginning in 2000, the GOP has blocked all efforts to assess the legitimacy of poll-defying Republican victories; ... 1/
(b) The GOP also blocked the SAFE Act election-security bill, which would have required Risk Limiting Audits for all federal races in 2020, including the GOP's unexpected sweep of "tossup" House races and poll-defying Senate victories in Maine and NC... 2/
The Republican party leadership has shown a willingness to lie and distort the truth on election integrity (eg., vulnerabilities = proof "Trump won,"  the myth of mass voter fraud, the "intelligence expert" who wasn't an intelligence expert, ... 3/

The #fraudit gives me extreme cognitive dissonance bc Ds shld demanded to do what Rs are doing (minus the bamboo shreds, etc). It is inside out. It was Rs that blocked efforts to require meaningful manual audits for all federal races. It is Ds who suffered poll-defying losses. 1/
It’s almost too much to deal with. It is so infuriating. Why can’t there be a happy medium between complete abdication (Democrats) and insurrection (Republicans)? 2/ axios.com/gop-senator-el…

😳”[W]hile elections administrators must still deploy voting machines w/ an auditable paper trail by 2022, they will not be req’d to follow new national standards issued by the ... EAC until 2026 at the earliest.”

So they can use the modems in 2022. 1/ washingtonpost.com/politics/hr1-v…
2/ The cellular modems installed by ES&S in swing states connect the voting system to the internet (altho ES&S has falsely claimed otherwise). #RemoveTheModems nbcnews.com/politics/elect…

Contextomy is propaganda that takes a “quote out of...context to artificially generate new meaning.”

Example: @dennis_welch posts video of AZ audit observer who says auditors are looking 4 bamboo shreds in ballots. Buries in video 2 that observer does NOT believe this himself 1/
Video goes viral. Large accounts harass this observer bc they are under the false impression—created by @dennis_welch and his misleading video editing—that Brakey believes the crazy theory that the ballots will be found to have bamboo shreds in them. 2/
.@Dennis_welch does not bother to clear up the confusion. It’s fun having your video go viral at someone else’s expense.

@KeithOlbermann doesn’t notice or doesn’t care about the many people correcting him.

@maddow runs the miskeadingly edited clip too. 3/

We can’t have early voting without e-pollbooks. But we shld not use them on Election Day, and we are doing that, sometimes without backup paper poll books.

We can’t have voters-can-vote-anywhere vote centers (like LA county’s crap system) w/o e-pollbooks either. 1/
2/ It’s one reason I oppose replacing precinct voting with voters-can-vote-anywhere mass voting centers. LA county was supposed to be the model, and it was a shit show. They want to take it national. prospect.org/civil-rights/i…
This is what happened when e-pollbooks failed in LA county in the 2020 primary. Backup paper poll nooks are impossible with this type of voters-can-vote-anywhere model. LA was mostly vote by mail in the general due to this f#CK up. 3/
