So, yes, today was bad. Objectively it was bad as every death at this point was preventable, and 400+ cases (in and not yet in the system), so this is a lot to sit with. But I am hopeful! The only way out is through. We can do this!
Here is why (a thread):
The province-wide lockdown came into effect 10 days ago, and there is a 14 day incubation period. Between the backlog of data entry and the fact that we still have 4 days to go, it's ok to not see a trend down yet. cbc.ca/player/play/18…
Right now, around 310k people in NS have gotten 1 or more shots in the arm. The province is getting around 79K doses a week from the Feds. This *should* ramp up in 2 weeks, but even if it doesn't 60% 1 shot in arms 16+ may 27ish, 70% June 4ish, 80% June 12ish.
Now 1 shot is not as good as 2 shots but studies show that 1 shot of AZ is 73% effective, and 80% effective at keeping folks out of hospital. latimes.com/science/story/…
Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are likely 80% effective against symptomatic COVID-19 after one dose.
Remember - the vaccines are not fully effective for 14-21 days after you get them, but we should see spread and serious illness drop rapidly between end of May to end of June.
So while we all need 2 doses, & youngsters need it, and a lot depends on variants, the bottom line is that as Dr Strang said, May will be awful, but betters days are ahead, just 4-6-8 weeks away.
So stay strong, stay home, we will get through this!
I want to unpack this a bit - Both @nsfedmuni & @FCM_online as well as @hfxgov staff, Mayor, myself have been working since March to obtain Fed and Provincial funding & support /1

What are the COVID issues? Slow payment especially of commercial tax this year creates a *cash flow* challenge, increased non-payment means some may not be recovered until a tax sale (3-4 years from now). /2
Further, much commercial assessment is based on "net operating income" meaning that the property tax impact of SME and other business failures will translate into less rent, and then commercial tax collected down the road, creating a *revenue* challenge in coming years. /3
Long thread here - I wanted post a quick note to acknowledge the poor state of sidewalks in Halifax right now. The quality of snow removal this last storm has not been acceptable.
The standards the municipality has adopted for sidewalk snow clearing are not very good, allowing up to a day and a half before residential sidewalks have to be cleared, and this week even those weak standards have not been met. This has to change.
While the snowstorm on Sunday night was challenging I do not believe that it was bad enough to justify the contractors taking several days more (and counting) to clear the sidewalks.
