To mark #EuropeDay today we researched Glasgow’s European links. Well,to be honest @JWils60 did most of the work!
Now we have 6 walking routes tracing European connections across the city;proving Glasgow is a European City & always has been #TeamGlasgowLoves at the Necropolis ⤵️
Fascinating visiting Glasgow’s Necropolis today seeing its architecture, sculpture. Interesting to note it is modelled on Père-Lachaise in Paris, it’s estimated 50,000 people are buried there - many with European connections #WeareEuropean#EuroWalk#EuropeDay2021@euromovescot
Our #Eurowalk today started at #Glasgow necropolis; here the memorial to Henry Dubs - the german locomotive engineer who played a significant role in Glasgow’s locomotive manufacturing industry, building train engines to be shipped across the world #EuropeDay2021@srpssteam
Another stop on our #eurowalk - @UniStrathclyde home to the European Policies Research Centre, and former Chancellor Alexander Todd won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry and awarded a degree to the King of Norway in recognition of longstanding Norwegian connections #WeareEuropean
This week we join Scotland’s leading pro-European campaign organisation, the European Movement in Scotland, #EMiS to launch a campaign, through its affiliated local groups across the Scotland, to #DefendDemocracy & highlight the sectors of the economy damaged by #Brexit.
In the face of serious threats to our economic & political future, it's time to join forces & shout "enough"! Campaigners will send letters to Scotland’s MPs & MSPs to demand that our elected representatives stand up for democracy & our country's economic interests.
EMiS chair, former MP (Edinburgh North & Leith) @marklazarowicz said: “Whatever people's views on the EU, on Scotland's future, we need to wake up to the steady dismantling of our democracy; to understand we risk sleepwalking into something which is a democracy in name only."
