Sam, sometimes we punish ourselves unnecessarily with the hope it will help us earn forgiveness. Sadly, we were raised to earn things, so we also have this mentality that we must earn forgiveness.
It will amaze you to realise that forgiveness is never earned but it is only received. To earn something means you worked hard to deserve it, but interestingly and respectfully so, forgiveness is not one of such things you earn.
You can never work hard enough or be good enough to earn forgiveness; you simple receive it from the one who gives it. Stop trying to earn what you have already been freely given to receive; it is foolery and foolhardy.
In the ancient text, it is replete with examples of receiving forgiveness. So, it says while we were yet sinners Christ died for us.
Even when we didn't even know him, our forgiveness was given, so that through him we get to receive the forgiveness of our sins (past, present and future). Remember the woman caught in the very act of adultery and brought to the Rabbi by her accusers?
Notice that she didn't do anything to earn forgiveness. No; she simply received the forgiveness the Rabbi gave. No wonder she came back later to express her love when she broke her alabaster box.
That's why the Rabbi said, "the one who is forgiven much, loves much." You have received forgiveness, so stop trying to earn what you received.
Sam, many times we assume that when we turn over a new leaf, change our old ways and become more religious, then we have the right to forgiveness.
Well, you are sincerely wrong. Because forgiveness is never earned by any works of ours, that's why you are told to forgive others the same way you have been forgiven.
Many people are wanting others to do well before they can earn their forgiveness but how well did you do before you earned your own forgiveness. Why make people do what you could not even do?
Forgiveness is a gift which we have freely received, so it must also be a gift that we freely give to others. Nothing should ever be done to earn it. Now, you may ask, "What if they abuse it?" Well people will always abuse what they don't understand.
Three simple reasons why we receive forgiveness:
1) there is nothing we can do to earn it
2) it has been freely given
3) so we can also freely give others who also do not deserve it

Just as no one can earn God's love, no one can earn God's forgiveness. This is because both have been given freely to be received. Therefore today, receive love and receive forgiveness.
