A saintly noble heading a march into the frontier,

A mature guide to command the forces of a young King and,

A nation in creation still searching for its independence.

Story in the evening ...
Guillaume was born around 755 to Theoderic, Count of Autun, and Aldana, likely a sister of Pepin, King of the Franks. When Pepin died in 768, his sons Karol and Karlomann, became joint Kings of the Franks. Theoderic retained a faithful role in the court. 1/10 https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guillermo_I_de_Tolosa#/media/A
In 781, Karol appointed his 3 year old son, Hludowic, as the King of Aquitaine. Karol was vary of his southern neighbours in Hispania, especially after his defeat in 778 at Roncevaux Pass. It is likely Guillaume was brought in as a tutor for young Hludowic. 2/10 https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Batalla_de_Roncesvalles#/media
Iberia was ruled by an offshoot of the Umayyad Caliphate that had collapsed in 750 - the Emirate of Córdoba. Pepin had captured Narbonne in 759, ending Córdoba's rule north of the Pyrenees, but Karol wanted a stronger southern border. 3/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umayyad_Caliphate#/media/File:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al-Andalus#/media/File:Al-Anda
When Chorso, Duke of Toulouse, was captured by the Basques in 788, Guillaume was appointed to Toulouse as his replacement. Guillaume was also given rule over Septimania and entasked with strengthening the southern border along with other nobles. 4/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispanic_Marches#/media/File:M
Guillaume, Rostaing, Borrell and the forces of King Karol helped in the creation of the Hispanic March, a series of eight counties along the Pyrenees and the Ebro river. Rostaing was given the rule of Girona and Borrell received Osona, Cerdanya and Urgell. 5/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_of_Roussillon#/media/Fi
In 793, Emir Hisham set out to reverse the Emirate's losses in Narbonne and the East. Guillaume coordinated the defence and though initially defeated, the Emir retreated back to Córdoba with the booty. 6/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hisham_I_of_C%C3%B3rdoba#/medi
In 801, King Hludowic led the siege of Barcelona. Guillaume again coordinated the attack, which was successful this time. Bero, son of "Guillaume of Toulose" (Bero was either an illegitimate son of Guillaume or a different Guillaume) was installed as the Count of Barcelona. 7/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/County_of_Barcelona#/media/Fil
Guillaume founded a monastery near the Gellone river to which he retired in 806. His son, Bernard, would rule later in Septimania and Barcelona and later descendants would rule in Aquitaine, Carcassonne and Auvergne. 8/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saint-Guilhem-le-D%C3%A9sert_A
County of Barcelona would end up in the hands of Seniofredo, Borrell's son and his descendants retained their connections to the northern side of the Pyrenees till 988, when Count Borrell II of Barcelona broke away from the nominal control of Capetian France. 9/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_Catalonia#/media/Fi
The core of the Hispanic March that Guillaume helped create became the Principality of Catalonia within the Kingdom of Aragon, when the Counts of Barcelona inherited Aragon. The region is now an autonomous community within the Kingdom of Spain. 10/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Catalonia#/med

A crumbling Empire, overrun by mercenaries and a Princess stemming the tide, stabilizing an Empire to last for centuries.

Story in the evening ...
Ariadne was born before 457 to Leon and Verina. Leon served in the Roman army of Theodosius, the Emperor in the East, but the power behind the throne were the Emperor's elder sister, Pulcheria, and Flavius Ardaburius Aspar, a general of Germanic descent, from Alani tribe. 1/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ariadne_(empress)#/media/File:
When Theodosius died in 450, Pulcheria and Aspar appointed Marcianus, whom Pulcheria later married, as the Emperor. Pulcheria died in 453, followed by Marcianus in 457. Aspar controlled the Eastern Empire, but could not rule himself. So, he appointed Leon, to be a puppet. 2/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leo_I_(emperor)#/media/File:Le

A princess of a once great nation,

A queen who set her sight for return to glory of the past and,

A murder that led to the nation's collapse.

Amalasuintha was born around 493 to Theodoric, King of the Ostrogoths, and Audofledis of the Franks. Her uncle Chlodovech was the King of the Franks and her illegitimate half sister Theodegothia was married to King Alaric of the Visigoths. 1/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amalasuintha#/media/File:Ritra
After the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West, it was quickly eaten up by the many Germanic tribes that supplied soldiers for the Empire. The Franks ruled over Gaul, the Visigoths in Hispania, while Theodoric conquered the Italian peninsula in 493. 2/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barbarian_kingdoms#/media/File

Studies show people prefer to add, even when subtracting may give a better solution. This is because adding is our default behaviour and we need incentives to subtract.

But there are ways to get out of our addition bias. 1/7

The year was 2004. I was working as a programmer in Hyderabad. Fresh out of college, it was an amazing experience and an excellent way to learn while I reappeared for my MBA entrance. 2/7
I worked on a product for the stock markets. It was a stable product and I had to review the code for bugs and correct it. I had to learn a new programming language and update myself on the stock market.

Overall, + on learning. 3/7

An ancient Empire comes to an end,

A rift that will never be sealed and,

An Emperor in prison.

Henri de Hainaut was born around 1176 to Count Baudouin of Hainaut and Marguerite de Flandre (later Countess of Flanders). Not much is known of his early life till 1201, when he set out for the Levant with his brother Baudouin to conquer Jerusalem. 1/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_of_Flanders#/media/File:
Things got ugly when they reached Venice. It was expected Venice would provide them transport by sea, but the Crusaders didn't have the money for it. The King who felt no pain.

Story in the evening ...
Baudouin was born in 1161 to Count Amaury of Jaffa & Ashkelon and Agnes de Courtenay. The young prince also had an elder sister, Sibylle, and would have a half sister, Isabelle, later. Amaury became the King of Jerusalem after his brother also named Baudouin died in 1162. 1/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin_IV_of_Jerusalem#/media
In Egypt, the Fatimid Caliphate had started to crumble. Amaury saw an advantage and pursued it. Nur ad-Din Zengi, Emir of Aleppo and Damascus, also had his plans. Initally, Amaury was ahead, but Nur ad-Din and his general Shirkuh countered it successfully. 2/10 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fatimid_Caliphate#/media/File:

Being an entrepreneur means you get to tackle problems daily. But what happens when you get stuck? 1/9
The year was 2012. I was working on a new billing software for my distribution firm. It had a PHP based frontend with a MySQL based backend running on an Apache server. (This idea came from a Tweetup). Everything was fine, but it was taking ages to get an invoice printed. 2/9
When you have to print dozens of invoices daily, this is a problem. 3/9
