Crab mentality is a metaphor used to describe a human way of thinking based on a pattern of behaviour noticed in crabs.
👇👇👇
If you put a crab in a bucket alone, it will climb out, but if you put a bunch of crabs in a bucket, they will pull back any crab who tries to escape.
It appears as if the crabs are thinking that if they are going down, they're taking everyone with them.
This probably isn't malicious in crabs, but crab mentality in humans, certainly is.
People with 'crab mentality.' live in fear of people becoming more successful than themselves, their way of thinking is 'If I cant have it, why should they'. So they take any means necessary to undermine other's efforts to achieve.
Some are very subtle in their methods.
Crab mentality is a form of mental manipulation, not physical like with crabs.
It results in people being held back as a result of being prevented from realizing their potential.
Imagine holding someone back from reaching their potential because you feel threatened?
Crab mentality in the workplace is abundant.
In my experience in the armed forces, many who wanted out were too afraid to leave, afraid they wouldn't make it in civilian 'civvie street'
Ambition to make it in 'civvie' street' was usually met with negativity.
"The grass isn't always greener on the other side." was a phrase we were reminded of daily, not by the officers, but by other ratings, not all of course, but enough for crab mentality to thrive.
The senior officers didn't have to do much convincing to stop people from leaving the service.
Just like the fishermen don't need to put a lid on their crab buckets, because they know they will keep each other from escaping.
I once stated my ambition to a senior colleague, he told me I would never be able to leave and achieve, or everyone would leave.
I've achieved that goal and I have been in the job for the last couple years, but now I know I have even more potential.
Crab mentality can also exist amongst family and friends.
People do not always have your best intentions at heart, some want you to live exactly the same standard of life as them and could feel betrayed if you follow your dreams.
They can be very manipulative in persuading you not to take a chance on yourself.
Some may just be concerned for you, other just don't want to see you do well.
Either way, you still need to put yourself first.
Your success is never a betrayal to anyone no matter what you achieve, do not let anyone make you feel like it is.
You will be able to tell by the negative vibe of the conversation that they don't have your best interests at heart, do not listen to any such toxic negative vibes
There are countless success stories out there from people who were told they couldn't achieve in life and then went on to make something of themselves.
We all have amazing potential, do not waste it allowing others to hold you back.
