2./ The obvious question is why it took SO long for LGBTQ+ groups in the UK to make a fuss about "conversion therapy" if it was SO important. Some organisations backing a ban have been around for 30 years. They didn't make a fuss because it's largely an invented problem.
3./ The brutal or cruel treatments everyone associates with the words "gay conversion therapy" have become next to non-existent in the UK. Society has moved on. And it hasn't been performed by licensed therapists since the 1970s; despite delusional nonsense like this.👇
4./ @JayneOzanne claims people in Britain are being correctively raped and beaten up but those are ALREADY criminal offences. A campaign founder made much of his experience as a missionary for a church (a tad ironically; don't THEY set out to convert?) .👇independent.co.uk/voices/lgbt-co…
5./ Apparently, his church asked him to repent of being gay. He didn't. But churches ask folk to repent of all sorts of stuff from masturbation to coveting your mate's car? My deep theological advice is don't join a church if you don't want to be told to repent of something.
6./ I'm as convinced an atheist as it's possible to be and not actually be Richard Dawkins but there's something creepy about this phrase from the Ban Campaign's founder : ...."the pernicious power of prayer must be dealt with", he says. Okay....Torquemada.👇😬 
7./ The ban is positively dangerous for gay people too. It's being proposed in order to enforce the 'affirmation model' in therapy that insists kids who say they're trans must have their 'gender identities' affirmed. The campaign defines anything else as 'conversion therapy'.
8./ But we know from the Keira Bell case that many young people who think they're trans are mistaken. They've other issues that need explored by therapy. The vast majority who are allowed to go through puberty will find their gender dysphoria disappears. persuasion.community/p/keira-bell-m…
9./ We also know more and more parents are becoming convinced their kids are trans. Parents can be wrong! Therapists need to be able to ignore parental assumptions in the interests of the child, otherwise kids like this will end up medicalised too fast.👇
10./ As @BBCNewsnight revealed, some parents who think they've a 'trans kid' harbour latent homophobia. At the Tavistock the 'need to affirm' meant therapists ended up collaborating with homophobic parents and are accused of harming young gay people's minds and bodies.
11./ Luckily, the govt has insisted that any ban will follow a public consultation. This is an opportunity for organisations that back a ban to explain how they will prevent harm to kids of all sorts who have become convinced they're trans when they may not be.
12./ Everyone wants to help kids who are genuinely gender dysphoric but criminalising the everyday practise of psychotherapy cannot be the right way to do that. Please sign the petition and help protect both therapists and children.👇petition.parliament.uk/petitions/5820…
