just woke up so maybe im missing the jOke but is like to see more people use the phrase spiritual materialism. it still fits very well into my worldview + is an very useful designator, even tho it was coined by a hardcore tibetan buddhist guy (weird guy btw look him up if u want)

find the second note here the most interesting as this guy was a straight up tibetan buddhist mega guru, so obviously he identified with a particular religion, like we all do, but in his mind there was an aspect of this that could cross over into ego aggrandizement, “materialism”

another interesting note here thats relevant slightly to my overall endeavor that i havent considered for some time is that trungpa (this guy, the guru) was, at least in my memory, a pretty hardcore alcoholic. if u have seen any shambala centers, pretty sure he started that [..]

i think he intended that to be the way tibetan buddhism would come over to the west. had some interesting ideas in here like, instead of wearing robes, hed have people wear a button down shirt and khakis, because the original point of robes was that it was not attention grabbing

so, wearing a white button down shirt and khakis was the equivalent, in his mind, because it just made you look like a normal person. here, robes having the opposite effect of, in the west, making you look like some person on a hardcore special holiness quest, i guess.

anyway, so he drank a lot, but he really hated weed. wouldnt let his students smoke it. this woman wrote some article on it, she was a student of his, and if i remember correctly he had her throw all her weed into this fire on a retreat and she was super mad about it. [...]

so she confronted him + asked him, why can you drink, but i cant smoke weed? and he said “when you get ready to start living your life, youre going to make a great drinker”. lol

i dont drink ever anymore + lowkey i dont really try to get spiritual advice from people who do [...]

thats really not a dig at people who drink, christianity allows it, i get it, its just that a large part of my spiritual situation has been wrestling w altered states so, just me personally, i feel like thats such a big part of my game, its intrinsic to my own path. thats just me

(its more complicated than that obviously but im keeping it fitting in tweets. i just mean me personally i wouldnt take on an alcoholic tibetan guy as my guru. no shade, thats just my vibe, thats all im saying.) [...]

anyway, i always thought that story was super interesting because of his phrasing, “when u get ready to start living ur life”. somehow i think he really had some deep insight into cannabis. i have used that phrasing with other people sometimes, not so harshly, but the idea of it.

if you poke around sometimes you get the weirdest nuggets of insight and little mental tools from the strangest and most unexpected places. in fact the further i go that seems to be the rule rather than the exception. actually it happens all the time. gm

should have phrased this differently, ironically given the subject of this thread this makes me sound like im a Super Special Spiritual Seeker (tm) or something. obviously i appreciate any insight from anywhere, so, just saying this isnt what i meant, i was thinking of “a guru”.

i guess i used to feel that way when “substances” was my main spiritual issue but i dont really feel that way anymore. its been a while. just thinking on the fly here hello welcome to the uncensored feed from my brAin
