A thing you may have missed is that Texas Republicans just voted to effectively ban public school teachers from talking about racism, white supremacy or current events. huffpost.com/entry/texas-re…
This bill, which just passed the Texas House and is close to being on the governor's desk, states that social studies and civics teachers can't discuss the *concept* that “one race or sex is inherently superior to another race or sex."
The bill also prevents teachers from discussing the idea that “an individual, by virtue of the individual’s race or sex, bears responsibility for actions committed in the past by other members of the same race or sex."
It also states that civics teachers “may not be compelled to discuss current events or widely debated and currently controversial issues of public policy or social affairs” as part of a course... on civics. 🤔
This bill also states that teachers don’t have to take professional training ― like cultural proficiency and equity training ― if it makes them feel any “discomfort, guilt, anguish, or any other form of psychological distress” because of their race or gender.
The hell with this bill?
“The idea is to whitewash American history of any legacy of racism and white supremacy,” said Texas Democratic state Rep. @jamestalarico.
“It's going to have a chilling effect on social studies and civics teachers across the state.”
The bill is part of a broader push by conservative GOPers to pass laws to prevent teaching “critical race theory,” an academic discipline focused on the idea (the reality) that racism is an everyday experience for most ppl of color + has shaped the country’s legal/social systems.
Texas’ bill goes further than other states.
In addition to all the restrictions it puts on teachers to tell the truth about U.S. history, it prevent students from participating in any political activity. Like... engaging with their own elected officials about a given issue.
Texas Republicans are expediting passage of this bill to get it to Republican Gov. Greg Abbott to sign into law. It is one of his top priorities.
Why?
Abbott has his eye on running for prez in 2024 and wants to beef up his conservative credentials, says Dem Rep. Talarico.
“Florida and Texas are trying to outcompete each other to see who can pass the most far-right Neanderthal legislation,” said Talarico.
"The focus is not children. The focus is on scoring points with old, white voters who see the country slipping away from them demographically.”
Talarico used to be a teacher. He called this bill "heartbreaking" + a travesty" for TX kids.
“Students have the best B.S. meters. As an educator, you have to tell them the truth. This bill will prevent them from telling their students the truth about the country we live in."
Anyway-- the Texas governor is eager to sign this bill into law very soon. There are roughly ~5.5 million kids enrolled in Texas public schools.
2+ weeks later, CNN still silent on its senior political commentator Rick Santorum saying there was “nothing” in America before white colonizers came -- and that Native Americans haven’t done much for American culture anyway. huffpost.com/entry/rick-san…
Santorum was a guest on CNN just last week, on Chris Cuomo's show.
We went ahead and asked all 37 of that show's advertisers if they're fine with sharing airtime with Santorum after his racist remarks. Silence. huffpost.com/entry/cnn-adve…
CNN is trying to quietly move on without addressing this.
CNN advertisers are too.
I guess nobody has a problem giving a massive platform to a guy who said “nothing” existed in America before white colonizers + Native Americans haven't done much for American culture anyway?
CNN advertisers silent on whether they'll keep sharing airtime with Rick Santorum after his claims that there was “nothing” in America before white colonizers came -- and that Native Americans haven’t done much for American culture anyway. huffpost.com/entry/cnn-adve… w/ @aterkel
37 companies ran ads during Chris Cuomo's show last Monday night, when Rick Santorum was brought back on CNN after his racist comments about Native Americans.
We asked all 37 of them about continuing to advertise around Santorum's appearances.
And... more than 2 weeks later, after numerous national civil rights and racial justice groups have condemned Santorum's remarks and demanded that CNN fire him, still no comment from CNN about any of it. huffpost.com/entry/cnn-adve…
Tonight another Indigenous-led group, NDN Collective, is calling on CNN to fire Rick Santorum for his offensive comments about Native Americans -- and to do better in general with lifting up Indigenous voices.
"This isn’t the first time that CNN or its commentators have made statements that outright erase Indigenous people.... CNN needs to take responsibility for their role in maintaining the structure of white supremacy, and that goes beyond an apology."
More from NDN Collective leaders. Really taking aim at CNN as the problem here, not just Santorum.
Biden urges Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act, one of his legacy issues.
"27 years ago I wrote it," says Biden.
Senate GOPers let its authorization expire in 2019 b/c they opposed new protections for LGBTQ + Native victims of abuse & a gun safety provision.
VAWA is currently waiting for action in the Senate. The House already passed its bipartisan bill in March.
VAWA has the same problems in the Senate that it had 2 years ago: GOPers aren't fans of the House bill's new LGBTQ, Native + gun safety provisions. huffpost.com/entry/violence…
The House-passed VAWA bill would prevent people convicted of abusing dating partners from owning guns, closing the "boyfriend loophole."
That's easily the bill's biggest obstacle in the Senate. Biden seems aware of this. He specifically cited it during his remarks tonight.
Big day for people who care about courts and judicial diversity. Biden's first judicial nominees get their Senate committee hearing this a.m.
First up:
*Ketanji Brown Jackson, nominee to the D.C. Circuit
*Candace Jackson-Akiwumi, nominee to the 7th Circuit
Demand Justice is among the progressive groups making a big push to get Jackson confirmed. Her face is plastered on lamp posts around Capitol Hill today.
Lotta buzz about Jackson potentially being Biden's next Supreme Court pick.
Lots of Supreme Court justices once sat on the D.C. Circuit, which is where Jackson is up for a seat. If she's confirmed, she'll take Merrick Garland's old seat.
8 of the 11 Republican lawmakers/doctors in this video voted to overturn the 2020 election based on lies about voter fraud that led to a violent Capitol insurrection -- and they voted to do so just hours after the insurrection.
