What's interesting here is that these are exactly the same lies that the Trump admin and campaign and its botnets and other enablers were pushing. Different language, same bullshit. It's like that all over the world
That's how I know it's been coordinated. It's formulaic, swaps out regional details but keeps the overall plots, and weaponized disformation only ever exists to attack democratic norms and human rights. A global, far right power grab.
France, late April: bbc.com/news/world-eur…
But I mean it's been like this. Disinfo purveyors will use something successful, sit on it for a couple of weeks or months, and then repurpose it. People are tense and distracted anyway because of everything else going on, and it's the easiest thing in the world to spread online
January 2020, wild rumors of arson rather than climate change exacerbating fires in Australia bbc.com/news/world-511…
Americans might find that peculiarly familiar, considering that it was repurposed a few months later, as it was built to do, but with an added wrinkle (and bullshit statistics like that previous "75%" being used to back them up) kval.com/news/local/sto…
Then, of course, there's QAnon. It's not that it was exported anywhere so much as this massive weaponized narrative, essentially a roadmap of all the bigotries and biases from which US conspiracy theories are spun, reflects those of other populations too

cnn.com/2021/04/23/tec…
Remember this from 2016? Trump's repellent anti-immigrant attack ads which used reappropriated photos and footage? theintercept.com/liveblogs/trum…
Two months earlier, same messaging, same reappropriation. The image in this case showed people in Slovenia, not Hungary. But neither showed either the UK or the USA. theguardian.com/politics/2016/…
Now, what entities might benefit tremendously from a distracted, weakened, infighting USA, UK, and EU?
Oh yeah, who can forget a few years ago when a presidential campaign was hacked and Wikileaks and far right enablers were sharing emails from it in order to create weaponized narratives and push wild smears? No, not that one. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Macr…
All this and I completely missed that there was a second letter in France at the same time as that weird US one that was evidently written in weird broken English 🤔 Well I'm sure it's just a coincidence! france24.com/en/france/2021…

USA "open letter" from generals released Monday versus France "open letter" from military released Sunday night (using Google Translate). ImageImage
My previous tweet said this letter was signed by French generals. I was wrong, these are active duty soldiers. The first letter, two weeks ago, was signed by ex-generals. Here is a story about the second letter, this week's france24.com/en/france/2021…
Also emphasized the USA letter's "tell." It's the #TantonNetwork. They are the ones pushing this language hardest and it originates with them, too. The next demand is about China, so Peter Navarro probably helped write this. Archived link here: web.archive.org/web/2021051220…

That's how they keep us in line, keeping us tied to piddling little grants that many of us ending up depending on in order to be able to do our increasingly important work. Sometimes they make us go into debt to pay "tuition." It's a way of keeping the Poors out of the plum jobs
Newsrooms are absolutely rotten with one huge and often completely invisible bias. Because the pay is so poor and investigative journalism work in particular can be relatively expensive and time consuming (I don't let anybody buy me food or drinks when I'm interviewing them, for
example, and never have -- which means I'll pick up the tab for us both, which can get expensive if you let interviewees choose the place to meet) it means that it self selects for people who can AFFORD to work in journalism. Which carries a HUGE set of expectations and biases

It's completely true, and you should see the state of our souls by now. Your friendly neighborhood debunkers are gonna spend a lot of time crying into our beers when this is all said and done
This is why we don't do a lot of new debunks lately. We've already debunked a lot of it. Now we're trying to get ahead of new disinformation campaigns on social media, which always refers back to old bullshit to give a sense of unbroken bullshit history
But what's cool is not only has every shitty fascist public figure and official in the world come after us in the last few years, we've also become alienated from some of our closer friends and family members in some cases and received daily anonymous death threats

Truly enjoying watching what's left of "Defend East County" descending into bickering and infighting while everyone is still sending me information and screengrabs about each other. Those ding dongs couldn't defend their way out of a paper bag with a rip in the bottom
I'm surprised they held off the inevitable death spiral for this long tbh, I could have told you a year ago how much every single one of these tools absolutely despises each other lol
Further reading from last year, when they hadn't yet completely shit the bed hahahahahahahaha sandiegouniontribune.com/news/watchdog/…
