January this year I posted a thread which outlined the issues my company was facing just 15 days into Brexit & the truly negative effects that were being realised. Now over 5 months later have things improved? 1/19
Now we have a better understanding of what Brexit really means to our business, our suppliers globally & the logistic issues. None of it is easy & none of it has been fun to deal with. It’s actually been the most difficult 5 months of my career. 2/19
The first major hurdle is getting the entire supply chain to work as one. For decades producers, shippers, importers and retailers all knew their place in the cycle which was seamless. That is now not the case & the chain is fragmented at best. 3/19
Frequently shipment are delayed because producers and shippers don’t know the procedures despite my company supplying details of how to enable a shipment correctly. So lead times have increased dramatically,
This leads to out of stock situations. 4/19
Once your customers have run out of stock this causes issues with forecasts on other lines and before to long a entire product range is not performing correctly. This is actually happening right now with several customers. 5/19
So here we have the first barrier to trade caused by cumbersome paperwork & producers not being sure of procedures because of Brexit even though they are still within the EU. For most of my suppliers they thought Brexit was nothing to do with them, big mistake. 6/19
My suppliers have started to understand that the entire supply chain from winery to retailer is adversely effected by Brexit. This will never change. My role in this chain is to get the stock moving & this is hugely challenging on a daily basis. 7/19
Before Brexit day we had applied and been approved for all of the following registrations, EORI number, Vat Number, GBWK number, Chief account access, ARWS number, deferment account, U.K. EMCS access, GBRC number. Still this was not enough. 8/19
It was only after the deal was done we discovered that we also needed a Movement guarantee to use our bonded facility fully, an organic importer license to sell the wines & of course still to come is the prospect of Vi-1 certificates. Thats 11 different barriers to trade. 9/19
Now remember the PM said his deal was good deal because it continued frictionless trade with the EU. That is a lie plain and simple, and he does want the wider public to know that. 10/19
On the EU side every producer has had to get a REX license to be able to export to the U.K. Sign a legal document with the logistics companies to allow them to clear stock out of the EU on the Ex1 & in turn be charged for this cost. So that is yet another barrier to trade. 11/19
All of this has already had a massive impact on how we trade & will do forever. Even this week it has taken 4 days to clear stock from our Bond because HMRC changed the coding within Chief without notice regarding wines above 15%. 12/19
Will get better as time keeps moving right? Well probably not. Currently the U.K. border force in RORO ports like Dover are not checking lorries passing through simply because they don’t have the infrastructure required to do so. 13/19
However once HMRC does have RORO border controls some time in late 2021 early 2022 I am sure we can all agree an actual barrier will slow things down further. Moreover the prospect of Vi-1 from January 2022 does not fill my industry with joy. 14/19
Once again the only person that wants vi1s is @michaelgove it would seem. The entire industry & every other wine producing nation in the world is against them. But Gove now seems reluctant to have that meeting he suggested. Wonder why? 14.5/19!
Logistics companies have been at the very brunt of Brexit, some have performed well but others less so. But all of them have increased their costs & all of them are taking much longer to do the job. 15/19
It’s my opinion that Covid has masked (excuse the pun) the true effect of Brexit with half our economy being shut for 5 months, however that’s about to change. We have seen our stock pile disappear over the past 10 days.16/19
The next few months will be the real test and I suspect the pressure on all supply chains will show. I also expect costs to increase further as capacity becomes harder to find & lead times become longer again. 17/19
So in conclusion Brexit thus far has done zero to help my industry. It has put considerable obstacles in the way of day to day trading, added substantial costs & time to produce the same services as a pre Brexit world. 18/19
Moreover my company has been trading for over 3 decades & we were well prepared for this shit show. For a start up it would be impossible to offer what we do from scratch today. That can’t be right. 19/19.
Well look what turned up while I was out. @WineMerchantMag can smell the Tories BS in the air too.
Again thankful for another 1M impressions for this thread thus far. I only want all people to really know the reality of what this country is doing to its self thank to a mis-guided political policy. Thanks.

I have been set a challenge by @richardsiddle to find any positives of Brexit and how it will be good for my industry. I am quite a positive guy so here is what I have come up with thus far.
So it’s true the grey market is dramatically reduced in the UK now and the direct to consumer mail order companies can’t bypass UK duties. So that is good. But it’s a tiny part of the UK wine industry.
Hmm starting to struggle now... if government did remove Vi-1 that would be a major boost to the trade and would make shipping interesting wines from non EU countries more viable. So that would be a Brexit bonus if Gove stopped being a numpty.

Here we are on the other side of Easter and still those #teethingproblems are biting. Over the past 3 months, since my first thread, I have seen things that really are depressing. Here is my next short thread.
Having over 24M hits on my Twitter account has lead to me to talk with prominent politicians on the opposition benches. However I still haven’t had the conversation with @michaelgove that he promised.
So what’s new since my appearance on @newsnight and @mrjamesob? Simple put very little. Supply chains are still struggling to cope, cost of logistics continue to rise & still total silence from the Tory-UKIP party.

We have now entered March on our #Brexit journey & as each day passes I get a clearer view of just how badly the Government have let down the U.K. with their shoddy little deal. In this thread I reveal all I have learnt in past couple of weeks. 1/23
The cost of importation of wine just keeps going up. I have now had to get another accreditation from the seven I already have, this time with Organic bodies as an Organic wine importer. This maintains status quo from 2020. 2/23
If you import any organic products inc wine from July 1st you must be registered. Your organic wines have to be stored separately and we are due to have an inspection to check our warehouse is real I guess. What a waste of time. 3/23

It’s now February 13th, a full month since my 1st thread where I highlighted just how bad brexit was turning out to be for the wine industry. Let’s see if it really is #teethingproblems. 1/28
I have still got issues with the heavily increased cost of Freight & still stock is painfully slow to arrive as both customs agents & us struggle with paperwork. But we are told its #teethingproblems by @BorisJohnson. I beg to differ . 2/28
#teethingproblems would be something you could iron out in a day or even a week, however Government is ignoring Importers & Exporters as they slowly strangle them so suit the true architects of this grand #Brexit plan of tax evasion. 3/28

I am now at the end of January 2021 and still no new stock. I can see clearly what #Brexit really means for my industry & how I will have to fundamentally change my business model if I am to be trading in 12 months time. But the government wants more paperwork in five months.1/15
This week I have been kept busy by planning how to ship wine to minimise the substantial rising costs. Now I can see the full carnage of what this government has done to my industry and the wider economy. But still no apology from any government official. 2/15
My business was big on Groupage shipping which meant we could offer a very broad selection of mid ranged wines to our customers all over the U.K. . It is this ranging which makes us who we are and why we win all our trade awards. 3/15

We are now 23 days into 2021, here is my second thread on how #brexit reality is holding my business back currently, as I watch the wine supply chain collapse before my very eyes. 1/22
Following on from my thread last week I was more than keen to resolve the issues I was having. With now famous #CHIEF computer declaration system, I again spent time checking the coding but sadly to no avail. 2/22
On Monday afternoon I was thrilled to receive a call from an extremely helpful HMRC senior officer from CDS/Chief team. She requested screen shots, which I supplied quickly, and she promised to reply as quickly as possible adding they were extremely busy with help enquiries. 3/22
