Home Office chief responds to that devastating long read by @trillingual.

The two pieces capture the central schizophrenia of pledges to become more humane after #Windrush while dialing up hate against asylum seekers in service of the Conservative re-election strategy.
We see this schizophrenia every day in our dealings with Home Office leaders.

I don't doubt the sincerity of their commitment to implement lessons from the #Windrush review.
I've seen at close range the changes in mindset when it comes to thinking about institutionalised cruelty & discrimination.

Some Home Office leaders even wrote to me with their reflections on a piece that @SatbirLSingh and I wrote on the #Windrush review

There is a new willingness to reach out to leaders of self-led migrant activist groups - to really hear and build meaningful two-way relationships with them.

Early days, for sure, but this was totally unthinkable two years ago.
But the vile politics of hate against asylum seekers driven by Patel and the Australian political strategists installed at Conservative HQ pulls the other way.

politics.co.uk/comment-analys…
And so the same civil servants trying to put things right after #Windrush are now tasked with destroying our asylum system.

Instead of rolling back the #HostileEnvironment environment they are rolling it out!
Patel wants to rip up the Refugee Convention by making the UK inhospitable for torture survivors and others arriving on their own to seek protection.

She's asked the civil servants to write new laws to eject them.

No wonder the UN is sounding an alarm
independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-n…
And this is the rub for @MatthewRycroft1.

The tone set by ministers, their politics and the laws they push through Parliament will always override well-meant initiatives he leads to change the culture in an opposite direction.
This is Rycroft's dilemma. But it is our call to arms.

He says that "As public servants, our job is to deliver on the priorities that the public care about and voted for."

Like these Glaswegians, we need to make what we care about visible from the moon!
Caring people are coming together across the country to stand with refugees and defend our asylum system.

We've united 100 groups - large & small - and the movement is growing every day.

#TogetherWithRefugees we can make the spirit of Windrush win out.

TORTURE IS THE ULTIMATE RED LINE.

Boris Johnson is trying to cross it.

Please stand with @FreefromTorture @SSOonline in our relentless bid to stop the #OverseasOperationsBill.

Here is why 👇🏼
The Bill cleared the Commons but we're working around the clock with allies to ensure its most odious features are addressed by the Committees & the Lords.
Veterans minister Johnny Mercer is sending signals about possible climb downs.

But the fight is far from over yet.

Home Secretary’s 'dangerous' rhetoric against lawyers 'is what you see in patterns of abusive behaviour by states around the world’

Creeping authoritarianism in Britain rolls on. They are targeting the immigration lawyers, but they won’t stop there. theguardian.com/global-develop…
This is not just about headlines.

It’s part of a deliberate Number 10 strategy to wind back civil liberties for all of us, under cover of “border control”.

Attacks on judicial review have already started. Next comes the Human Rights Act. Then withdrawal from the ECHR.
Be wise to this playbook and we can defeat it - by standing with those they are targeting first:

- Asylum seekers and other marginalised migrants
- the lawyers who defend their rights

And resisting every single move to put ministers beyond the reach of our fine Courts.
