I will say one thing about this that doesn't have a lot of nuance, but needs to be said. Many engineers are very luck that they don't get held accountable for the systems they write. That's not something people actually want, because the stakes are gonna go up real fast.
You can do a lot with little to no informal training. But if you want to build systems that are robust, secure, and scalable, it takes a lot of learning and experience. If you got held accountable for all your mistakes while going through that learning process, you'd be fucked.

The nuance here is that I talk to a lot of people about how the interview process is broken or levels and promotions don't make sense. But folks think they can ask for those things to be more rigorous without changing anything else about the job. I don't believe that at all.
I've been thinking a lot about the need for more professional organizations around software development. But I've been thinking through these questions about what problems we are trying to solve with it, and what the implications are if we do.
